REGENERATABLE SYSTEM FOR CONTAMINANT REMOVAL
A system and method for water purification by capture of contaminants in an aqueous mixture is described herein. A system and method for regenerating the capture system is also described. An integrated capture and regeneration system and method is also described including a separation vessel that houses a capture bed and optionally an electrode in electrical contact with the bed with a power source for applying a voltage to the electrode. The applied voltage enhances capture of the contaminant from aqueous liquid on the capture bed and modulation of the applied voltage enhances release of contaminant on the capture bed into aqueous wash liquid to regenerate the bed. The aqueous wash liquid may contain a counter ion that binds to the contaminant forming an aggregate contaminant phase that separates from the aqueous wash liquid.
COMPOSITIONS FOR THE REMEDIATION OF PER- AND POLY-FLUOROALKYL SUBSTANCES IN WASTEWATER
Methods and compositions for remediating wastewater formed by water and contaminants, which may include per- and poly-flouroalkyl substances (PFAS), using a wastewater treatment system including a collecting unit, a dewatering unit, a drying unit, and a baking unit. Wastewater provided to the collecting unit is dosed by adding a compound to the wastewater in an amount that is sufficient to cause the contaminants to separate from the water and to form a sludge. The compound can include combinations of salts, glacial acetic acid, chitosan, and water. The sludge is dewatered with the dewatering from a first dryness level a second dryness level. The dewatered sludge is then dried in the drying unit from the first dryness level to a third dryness level. The dried sludge is then baked at a sufficiently high enough temperature that chemical bonds of at least a portion of the contaminants are destroyed.
TREATMENT OF TAILINGS STREAMS WITH ONE OR MORE DOSAGES OF LIME, AND ASSOCIATED SYSTEMS AND METHODS
Methods and systems for treating oil sands tailings streams using multiple dosages of lime are disclosed herein. In some embodiments, the method comprises providing a tailings stream including 3-40% solids by total weight, combining the tailings stream with a first dosage of lime to produce a first mixture having a pH of less than 12.0, and then combining the first mixture with a polymer to produce a second mixture. In some embodiments, the method can further include combining the second mixture with a second dosage of lime to produce a third mixture having a pH greater than 12.0, and dewatering the third mixture in a centrifuge unit and/or a pressure filtration unit to produce a product stream having 55% or more solids by weight.
ENHANCED FLOCCULATION OF INTRACTABLE SLURRIES USING SILICATE IONS
Methods are provided for treating intimately dispersed mixtures of water, bitumen, and fine clay particles, such as oil sands mature fine tailings (MFT). Select methods use dissolved silicate ions and a base (alkali), optionally in combination with a biopolymer, to flocculate a slurry. A mixing regime is disclosed involving the addition to MFT of silicate ions in solution and alkali, to initiate aggregation/destabilization of clay particles. Methods are exemplified that provide distinct sediment layers in conjunction with the release of residual bitumen (for example 40-50% of the initial bitumen content). In these exemplified embodiments, a densely packed bottom layer containing ˜75 wt. % solids showed high yield stress values (3.5-5.5 kPa) and entrapped little residual bitumen (0.2-0.3 wt. %). The methods accordingly segregate a material suitable for reclamation.
FUNCTIONAL MATERIAL FOR SYNCHRONOUSLY STABILIZING MULTIPLE METALS AND PREPARATION METHOD THEREOF, AND METHOD FOR REHABILITATING SOIL OR WASTEWATER CONTAMINATED BY HEAVY METALS (METALLOIDS)
Disclosed are a functional material for synchronously stabilizing multiple metals and a preparation method thereof, and a method for rehabilitating soil or wastewater contaminated by heavy metals (metalloids). The preparation method includes: mixing a ferrous salt, a ferric salt, a manganous salt, water, a dispersing material, and a phosphate to obtain a first mixture, and subjecting the first mixture to a first precipitation reaction to obtain a first reaction mixture containing the phosphate; adjusting a pH value of the first reaction mixture containing the phosphate to 10-12 by adding an alkali thereto to obtain a second mixture, subjecting the second mixture to a second precipitation reaction to obtain a second reaction mixture; and subjecting the second reaction mixture to a solid-liquid separation to obtain a solid, washing the solid, and drying to obtain the functional material for synchronously stabilizing multiple metals.
METHODS FOR PRODUCING AND USING ALKALINE AQUEOUS FERRIC IRON CARBONATE SOLUTIONS
A method for producing and using an alkaline aqueous ferric iron carbonate solution is disclosed. The method broadly comprises reacting at least one ferric iron salt reagent with at least one alkali metal carbonate salt reagent and forming an alkaline aqueous ferric iron carbonate solution comprising an aqueous-soluble, ferric iron carbonate complex. The reacting generally includes reacting a solid with an aqueous solution. The reacting may include reacting a solid comprising one or both of the ferric iron salt reagent and alkali metal carbonate salt reagent with an aqueous solution. A method for removing reduced sulfur compounds from a reduced sulfur-containing fluid is also disclosed.
