FLUORESCENT NAPHTHALIMIDE POLYMERS AND SOLUTIONS THEREOF FOR SCALE CONTROL IN AQUEOUS SYSTEMS

Disclosed are fluorescent water-soluble water treatment polymers suitable for use in scale inhibition in industrial water systems, the water treatment polymers comprising non-quaternized fluorescent naphthalimide derivative monomers. Also disclosed are methods of making the monomers, methods of making the polymers, methods of inhibiting scale in an industrial water system, and methods of using the polymers in coagulation and flocculation, and in cleaning applications.

Method of controlling scale in aqueous systems

A method of inhibiting scale in an industrial water system includes the steps of dosing the industrial water system with a water treatment polymer comprising at least 10 mol % of carboxylic acid monomer and a quaternized naphthalimide fluorescent monomer as disclosed herein, and then monitoring the fluorescence of the water system. The polymers are also useful for flocculation and coagulation in wastewater treatment.

Oleyl propylenediamine-based corrosion inhibitors

Disclosed are oleyl propylenediamine-based compounds used in compositions and methods for inhibiting corrosion. The method comprises introducing into a fluid source a composition comprising one or more oleyl propylenediamine-based compounds comprising Formula I: ##STR00001## wherein Y.sub.1, Y.sub.2, and Y.sub.3 independently are hydrogen or a substituent of Formula (II): ##STR00002## wherein V is —O— or —NH—, W is optionally present and is a linear or branched C.sub.1-10 aliphatic group, X is —H, —NZ.sub.3.sup.+, —COOH, —SO.sub.3H, —OSO.sub.3H.sub.2, —PO.sub.3H, —OPO.sub.3H.sub.2, or a salt thereof, each Z independently is hydrogen or a linear or branched C.sub.1-20 aliphatic group optionally interrupted or substituted with one or more oxygen atoms, and R is hydrogen or methyl, provided that at least one of Y.sub.1, Y.sub.2, or Y.sub.3 is a substituent of Formula (II).

The multiple charged cationic compounds are derived from polyamines through a ring-opening reaction with an epoxide or two reactions: an aza-Michael addition with an activated olefin having a cation group and a ring-opening reaction with an epoxide. The disclosed methods or compositions are found to be effective than those methods or compositions including commonly used corrosion inhibitors for water systems.

Quaternary cationic polymers

A cationic polymer salt composition is provided that includes a reaction product derived from reaction of a polyamine or a polyalkyleneimine and a substituted alkyl trialkyl quaternary ammonium salt. Also provided are surfactant compositions. The compositions may also include carriers, such as water, methanol, ethanol, propanol, isopropanol, butanol, isobutanol, monoethyleneglycol, an ethyleneglycol monobutyl ether, and hexylene glycol.
