The present invention provides a method for water disinfection by exposing water, optionally simultaneously, to a combination of at least two ultraviolet (UV) irradiation sources, wherein at least one of said UV irradiation sources emits light at a wavelength of between 250 nm and 280 nm, and at least one of said UV irradiation sources emits light at a wavelength of between 285 nm and 310 nm; and an apparatus for carrying out said method.

The heat exchange chamber is thermally connected to the light source. The sterilization device may further include a heat pipe that thermally connects the light source and the heat exchange chamber. The heat pipe may be provided to extend vertically upward from the light source toward the heat exchange chamber.

An apparatus for the treatment of a fluid comprises a fluid chamber and at least one ultraviolet light unit arranged at a periphery of the fluid chamber. The at least one ultraviolet light unit comprises at least one ultraviolet light emitting diode and an ultraviolet light directing element. The ultraviolet light directing element is configured to collimate at least a portion of the light emitted from the at least one ultraviolet light emitting diode in use such that the ultraviolet light rays emitted from each ultraviolet light unit are parallel in a first plane. Also described is a method for the cooling a light emitting diode in a fluid treatment system.
