Multi-core optical fiber ribbons and methods for making the same
Multi-core optical fiber ribbons and methods for making multi-core optical fiber ribbons are described herein. In one embodiment, a multi-core optical fiber ribbon includes at least two core members formed from silica-based glass and oriented in parallel with one another in a single plane. Adjacent core members have a center-to-center spacing ≧15 microns and a cross-talk between adjacent core members is ≦−25 dB. In this embodiment each core member is single-moded with an index of refraction n.sub.c, and a core diameter d.sub.c. In an alternative embodiment, each core member is multi-moded and the center-to-center spacing between adjacent core members is ≧25 microns. A single cladding layer is formed from silica-based glass and surrounds and is in direct contact with the core members. The single cladding layer is substantially rectangular in cross section with a thickness ≦400 microns and an index of refraction n.sub.cl<n.sub.c.
Method for manufacturing optical fiber parent material, and method for manufacturing optical fiber
A method for manufacturing an optical fiber preform including a core part and a cladding part is disclosed. The method includes: adding an alkali metal to an inner surface of a silica-based glass pipe; etching the inner surface of the silica-based glass pipe to which the alkali metal is added; making a glass rod by collapsing the silica-based glass pipe after the etching; and making an optical fiber preform using the glass rod. The silica-based glass pipe is heated in the adding such that a surface temperature of the silica-based glass pipe falls within a temperature range of 1500° C. or higher to lower than 2000° C.
Optical fibers and preforms with one step fluorine trench and overclad and methods for making the same
A method is provided that includes: forming a low-index trench region with a first density; forming an inner barrier layer comprising silica around the trench region at a second density greater than the first density; depositing silica-based soot around the first barrier layer to form an overclad region at a third density less than the second density; inserting a core cane into a trench-overclad structure; forming an outer barrier layer comprising silica in an outer portion of the overclad region at a fourth density greater than the third density; flowing a down dopant-containing gas through the trench-overclad structure to dope the trench region with the down dopant, and wherein the barrier layers mitigate diffusion of the down-dopant into the overclad region; and consolidating the trench-overclad and the core cane.

An optical fiber includes a core, and a clad surrounding an outer circumference of the core, in which a first relative refractive index difference Δ1a is greater than 0, a second relative refractive index difference Δ1b is greater than 0, the first relative refractive index difference Δ1a is greater than the second relative refractive index difference Δ1b, the first relative refractive index difference Δ1a and the second relative refractive index difference Δ1b satisfy a relationship denoted by the following expression: 0.20≦(Δ1a−Δ1b)/Δ1a≦0.88, and a refractive index profile Δ of the core in an entire region of a section of 0≦r≦r1 as a function Δ(r) of a distance r from a center of the core in the radial direction is denoted by the following expression: Δ(r)=Δ1a−(Δ1a−Δ1b)r/r1.
VACUUM-BASED METHODS OF FORMING A CANE-BASED OPTICAL FIBER PREFORM AND METHODS OF FORMING AN OPTICAL FIBER USING SAME
The vacuum-based methods of forming an optical fiber preform include applying a vacuum to a preform assembly. The preform assembly has at least one glass cladding section with one or more axial through holes, with one or more canes respectively residing in the one or more axial through holes. The opposite ends of the at least one glass cladding section are capped to define a substantially sealed internal chamber. A vacuum is applied to the substantially sealed internal chamber to define a vacuum-held preform assembly. The methods also include heating the vacuum-held preform assembly to just above the glass softening point to consolidate the vacuum-held preform to form the cane-based glass preform. An optical fiber is formed by drawing the cane-based glass preform. The same furnace used to consolidate the vacuum-held preform can be used to draw the optical fiber.
LOW ATTENUATION FIBER WITH STRESS RELIEVING LAYER AND A METHOD OF MAKING SUCH
A single mode optical fiber having a core made from silica and less than or equal to about 11 weight % germania and having a maximum relative refractive index Δ.sub.1MAX. The optical fiber also has an inner cladding surrounding the core and having a minimum relative refractive index Δ.sub.2MIN, a first outer cladding surrounding the inner cladding and a second outer cladding surrounding the first outer cladding. The viscosity at 1650° C. of the second outer cladding minus the viscosity at 1650° C. of the first outer cladding is greater than 0.1e.sup.7 Poise, and Δ.sub.1MAX>Δ.sub.2MIN. The single mode optical fiber may also have an outer cladding surrounding the inner cladding made from silica or SiON. The first outer cladding has a maximum relative refractive index Δ.sub.3MAX, and Δ.sub.3MAX>Δ.sub.2MIN.
Method for producing porous glass base material
In a device for producing a large-sized porous base material by a VAD process, the cracking and variation of the outer diameter of the base material are suppressed by forming a smooth tapered part, without changing the length of a non-effective part. In producing the porous base material by a VAD process, the time for a gas to reach a flow amount of the gas in a steady state from starting of the deposition is extended more in a burner that deposits glass microparticles on a layer closer to the outside of the base material.
High chlorine content low attenuation optical fiber
An optical fiber having a core comprising silica and greater than 1.5 wt % chlorine and less than 0.5 wt % F, said core having a refractive index Δ.sub.1MAX, and an inner cladding region having refractive index Δ.sub.2MIN surrounding the core, where Δ.sub.1MAX>Δ.sub.2MIN.
Optical fiber manufacturing method using relative bulk densities
An optical fiber manufacturing method includes setting a first holding member and a rod inside a glass pipe, the first holding member made of glass and having plural holes formed, so that the rod is supported by the first holding member; filling glass particles between the rod and a glass pipe inner wall; holding the rod such that the rod and the filled glass particles are enclosed by the glass pipe inner wall and the first and second holding members, and sealing one end of the glass pipe and manufacturing an intermediate; and manufacturing an optical fiber from the intermediate, wherein a bulk density of the first and second holding members is set with reference to a bulk density of a filling portion made from the glass particles, and the predetermined range is determined according to a core diameter permissible variation range in its longitudinal direction.
Tapered core fiber manufacturing methods
Tapered core fibers are produced using tapered core rods that can be etched or ground so that a fiber cladding has a constant diameter. The tapered core can be an actively doped core, or a passive core. One or more sleeving tubes can be collapsed onto a tapered core rod and exterior portions of the collapsed sleeving tubes can be ground to provide a constant cladding diameter in a fiber drawn from the preform.
