OPTICAL FIBER WITH VARIABLE ABSORPTION
An optical fiber may comprise a core doped with one or more active ions to guide signal light from an input end of the optical fiber to an output end of the optical fiber, a cladding surrounding the core to guide pump light from the input end of the optical fiber to the output end of the optical fiber, and one or more inserts formed in the cladding surrounding the core. The core may have a geometry (e.g., a cross-sectional size, a helical pitch, and/or the like) that varies along a longitudinal length of the optical fiber, which may cause an absorption of the pump light to be modulated along the longitudinal length of the optical fiber.
PHOTONIC CRYSTAL FIBER, A METHOD OF PRODUCTION THEREOF AND A SUPERCONTINUUM LIGHT SOURCE
A Photonic Crystal Fiber (PCF) a method of its production and a supercontinuum light source comprising such PCF. The PCF has a longitudinal axis and includes a core extending along the length of said longitudinal axis and a cladding region surrounding the core. At least the cladding region includes a plurality of microstructures in the form of inclusions extending along the longitudinal axis of the PCF in at least a microstructured length section. In at least a degradation resistant length section of the microstructured length section the PCF includes hydrogen and/or deuterium. In at least the degradation resistant length section the PCF further includes a main coating surrounding the cladding region, which main coating is hermetic for the hydrogen and/or deuterium at a temperature below T.sub.h, wherein T.sub.h is at least about 50° C., preferably 50° C.<T.sub.h<250° C.
Method of manufacturing porous glass deposition body for optical fiber
Provided is a method of manufacturing a porous glass deposition body for optical fiber comprising depositing silica powder on a starting member being raised and rotated by using burners with different deposition positions. With a glass raw material flow rate supplied to a core deposition burner represented by F.sub.1 and a total flow rate of glass raw material supplied to a cladding deposition burner adjacent to the core deposition burner represented by F.sub.2, during an initial deposition stage occurring before gas conditions reach a stable state, glass raw material is supplied to points at the same longitudinal position of the deposition body such that a glass raw material flow rate ratio F.sub.2/F.sub.1 is no less than 0.69 and no greater than 1.03.
MANUFACTURING OF OPTICAL FIBERS WITH SYMMETRY-BREAKING LONGITUDINAL PROTRUSIONS
A method of manufacturing an optical fiber is provided. The method involves providing a fiber preform with an active core and a pump-guiding cladding, and assembling one or more side rods to the fiber preform. The side rods extend longitudinally along an outer surface of the pump-guiding cladding. The resulting fiber preform assembly is drawn into the optical fiber. Each side rod defines a longitudinal protrusion extending along the optical fiber. Each longitudinal protrusion may have a cross-section forming a middle bump projecting radially away from the outer surface of the pump-guiding cladding and smooth transition regions with this outer surface of the pump-guiding cladding on opposite sides of the middle bump.
Manufacturing method of optical fiber preform
A manufacturing method of an optical fiber preform used to produce an optical fiber includes: etching a surface of a core preform that forms a core of the optical fiber with a plasma flame in a chamber; obtaining a porous preform by depositing glass particles on an etched surface of the core preform to form an outside vapor-deposited layer that forms a cladding of the optical fiber in a state where the core preform is put into the chamber; and heating and sintering the porous preform. When obtaining the porous preform, the outside vapor-deposited layer is formed by repeatedly performing the deposition of the glass particles multiple times through supply of source material gas. In a first deposition among the multiple times of deposition of the glass particles, a flow rate of the source material gas is less than or equal to 50% of a stable value.
OPTICAL FIBER
An optical fiber according to an embodiment includes a core, a cladding, and a coating layer. At the boundary between the core and the cladding, the local sound velocity decreases in the direction from the core side toward the cladding side. At least in the cladding, the local sound velocity changes continuously in a radial direction. Further, the line width of the Brillouin gain of the light beam guided by the fundamental mode is 60 MHz or more.
Optical fiber, coated optical fiber, and optical transmission system
The optical fiber has an effective area that is greater than or equal to 110 μm.sup.2 and less than or equal to 180 μm.sup.2 at a wavelength of 1550 nm and a cable cut-off wavelength of less than or equal to 1530 nm. An average value of a glass outer diameter in a longitudinal direction is 125±0.5 μm. When σ is a standard deviation of the glass outer diameter in the longitudinal direction, 3σ is greater than or equal to 0.1 μm and less than or equal to 0.5 μm.

A Photonic Crystal Fiber (PCF) a method of its production and a supercontinuum light source comprising such PCF. The PCF has a longitudinal axis and includes a core extending along the length of said longitudinal axis and a cladding region surrounding the core. In at least a degradation resistant length section of the microstructured length section the PCF includes hydrogen and/or deuterium. In at least the degradation resistant length section the PCF further includes a main coating surrounding the cladding region, which main coating is hermetic for the hydrogen and/or deuterium at a temperature below T.sub.h, wherein T.sub.h is at least about 50 C., preferably 50 C.<T.sub.h<250 C.
TENSION-BASED METHODS FOR FORMING BANDWIDTH TUNED OPTICAL FIBERS FOR BI-MODAL OPTICAL DATA TRANSMISSION
Methods of forming a bandwidth-tuned optical fiber for short-length data transmission systems include establishing a relationship between a change in a modal delay , a change T in a draw tension T and a change in a BM wavelength of light in a BM wavelength range from 840 nm and 1100 nm for a test optical fiber drawn from a preform and that supports BM operation at the BM wavelength. The methods also include drawing from either the preform or a closely related preform the bandwidth-tuned optical fiber by setting the draw tension based on the established relationships of the aforementioned parameters so that the bandwidth-tuned optical fiber has a target bandwidth greater than 2 GHz.Math.km at a target wavelength within the BM wavelength range.
METHOD FOR MANUFACTURING MULTIMODE OPTICAL FIBERS
A method of manufacturing a multimode optical fiber includes specifying a peak wavelength .sub.P for the multimode optical fiber. The peak wavelength .sub.P corresponds to a wavelength at which the multimode optical fiber has a maximum bandwidth. The multimode optical fiber comprises a core and a cladding surrounding and directly adjacent to the core. The core has a radius r.sub.1 and a maximum relative refractive index .sub.1,MAX>0. The cladding comprises a depressed-index region having a minimum relative refractive index .sub.3,MIN<0 and a volume v. A draw tension T for the multimode optical fiber is selected based on a correlation relating peak wavelength .sub.P to draw tension T, the correlation comprising a correlation constant. The correlation constant K is a function of at least one of .sub.1,MAX, r.sub.1, v, .sub.3,MIN, and .sub.P. The multimode optical fiber is drawn from a preform at the draw tension T.
