LOW LOSS OPTICAL FIBER WITH CORE CODOPED WITH TWO OR MORE HALOGENS
A co-doped optical fiber is provided having an attenuation of less than about 0.17 dB/km at a wavelength of 1550 nm. The fiber includes a core in the fiber having a graded refractive index profile with an alpha of greater than 5. The fiber also includes a cladding in the fiber that surrounds the core addition, the core includes silica that is co-doped with two or more halogens.
Single mode optical fibers with Brillouin frequency-shift management
The single-mode optical fibers have a core region that includes an inner core region having a delta value .sub.1 and a radius r.sub.1 immediately surrounded by an outer core region of radius r.sub.2 and a delta value .sub.2<.sub.1, wherein .sub.1-.sub.2 is in the range from 0.3% to 2%. A cladding region of radius r.sub.3 immediately surrounds the core region. The inner and outer regions define an annular width r=r.sub.2r.sub.1. At least one of r.sub.1, r.sub.2, r and r.sub.3 changes with a period p in the longitudinal direction between first and second values each having a corresponding level distance d.sub.F. The change occurs over a transition distance d.sub.T such that d.sub.T/d.sub.F<0.1. The Brillouin frequency shift f changes by an amount [f] that is least 10 MHz over each period p, thereby allowing for Brillouin frequency-shift management in fiber-based sensor systems.
A METHOD FOR MANUFACTURING A PREFORM FOR OPTICAL FIBERS
The present invention relates to a method for manufacturing a preform for optical fibers, which method comprises the sequential steps of: i) deposition of non-vitrified silica layers on the inner surface of a hollow substrate tube; ii) deposition of vitrified silica layers inside the hollow substrate tube on the inner surface of the non-vitrified silica layers deposited in step i); iii) removal of the hollow substrate tube from the vitrified silica layers deposited in step ii) and the non-vitrified silica layers deposited in step i) to obtain a deposited tube; iv) optional collapsing said deposited tube obtained in step iii) to obtain a deposited rod comprising from the periphery to the center at least one inner optical cladding and an optical core; v) preparation of an intermediate layer by the steps of: *deposition of non-vitrified silica layers on the outside surface of the deposited tube obtained in step iii) or deposited rod obtained in step iv) with a flame hydrolysis process in an outer reaction zone using glass-forming precursors, and subsequently; *drying and consolidating said non-vitrified silica layers into a vitrified fluorine-doped silica intermediate cladding layer; and *in case preceding step iv) was omitted collapsing; to C provide a solid rod comprising from the periphery to the center the intermediate layer, at least one inner optical cladding and an optical core; wherein a fluorine-comprising gas is used during the deposition and/or drying and/or consolidating and wherein the intermediate layer has a ratio between the outer diameter of the intermediate cladding layer (C) to the outer diameter of the optical core (A) that is at least 3.5; vi) deposition of natural silica on the outside surface of the intermediate cladding layer of the solid rod obtained in step v) by melting natural silica particles in an outer deposition zone to produce an outer cladding whereby a preform is obtained.
Low attenuation fiber with viscosity matched core and inner clad
A single mode optical fiber having a core made from silica and less than or equal to about 6.5 weight % germania and having a maximum relative refractive index .sub.1MAX. The optical fiber also has an inner cladding surrounding the core and having a minimum relative refractive index .sub.2MIN. A difference between a softening point of the core and a softening point of the inner cladding is less than or equal to about 20 C., and .sub.1MAX>.sub.2MIN. The single mode optical fiber may also have an outer cladding surrounding the inner cladding made from silica or SiON. The outer cladding has a maximum relative refractive index .sub.3MAX, and .sub.3MAX>.sub.2MIN. A method for manufacturing an optical fiber includes providing a preform to a first furnace, the preform, drawing the optical fiber from the preform, and cooling the drawn optical fiber in a second furnace.
Low bend loss single mode optical fiber with bromine up-doped cladding
According to embodiments, an optical fiber may include a core portion comprising an outer radius r.sub.C and a maximum relative refractive index .sub.Cmax. A cladding may surround the core portion and include a low-index trench and an outer cladding. The low index trench may surround the core portion and includes an outer radius r.sub.T and relative refractive index .sub.T. The outer cladding may surround and be in direct contact with the low-index trench. The outer cladding may be formed from silica-based glass comprising greater than 1.0 wt. % bromine and has a relative refractive index .sub.OC, wherein .sub.Cmax>.sub.OC>.sub.T. The optical fiber may have a cable cutoff of less than or equal to 1530 nm. An attenuation of the optical fiber may be less than or equal to 0.185 dB/km at a wavelength of 1550 nm.
OPTICAL FIBER
Provided is an optical fiber containing an alkali metal element or the like having a smaller diffusion coefficient than K and having a low Rayleigh scattering loss. An optical fiber is composed of silica glass and includes a core and a cladding arranged to surround the core which has a lower refractive index than the core. The core includes a first core including a central axis and a second core arranged to surround the first core. The average concentration of an alkali metal element or alkaline-earth metal element in the first core is 10 mol ppm or less. The average concentration of chlorine in the first core is 2000 mol ppm or more. The average concentration of an alkali metal element or alkaline-earth metal element in the second core is 10 mol ppm or more. The average concentration of chlorine in the second core is 10 to 600 mol ppm.
Method of manufacturing an active optical fibre and the active optical fibre
The invention relates to a method of manufacturing an active optical fiber having a cladding and a doped core, as well as the active optical fiber equipped with the cladding and the doped core. The active optical fiber according to the invention is adapted to conduct and generate radiation having a wavelength and is provided with a cladding and a core containing at least one active dopant, characterized in that the core comprises elongate elements made of a first type of glass having a first refractive index n.sub.1 and elongate elements of a second type of glass having a second refractive index n.sub.2, oriented along the optical fiber and forming a compact bundle, wherein transverse dimensions of the elongate core elements are smaller than of the wavelength . Such optical fibers are used in laser generation and in amplification techniques.
OPTICAL FIBER GLASS PREFORM MANUFACTURING METHOD
A method of manufacturing an optical fiber glass preform, the method comprising depositing glass particles on a base material, the glass particles being generated by glass making feedstock gas being supplied while a burner and the base material that is rotating are reciprocated relatively to each other, wherein when a portion corresponding to an outer diameter equal to or more than 0.80 L and equal to or less than L is deposited, wherein L represents a final outer diameter of a part of the optical fiber glass preform manufactured, the part being formed by the deposition of the glass particles, the deposition is performed under a first condition where an angle formed by a first line extending from a center O of a cross section of the base material to a rotational position r0 at which one round trip of the relative reciprocation starts and a second line extending from the center O to a rotational position r1 at which the one round trip of the relative reciprocation ends is an angle excluding 0, 120, 240, 72, 144, 216, and 288; or the deposition is performed under a second condition where the angle is 120 or 240, thereby to deposit the glass particles to a thickness corresponding to a thickness equal to or less than 0.03 L; or the deposition is performed under a third condition where the angle is 72, 144, 216, or 288, thereby to deposit the glass particles to a thickness corresponding to a thickness equal to or less than 0.02 L; or the deposition is performed under a fourth condition where the angle is 0, thereby to deposit the glass particles to a thickness corresponding to a thickness equal to or less than 0.01 L.
