Polysilazane-derived coating for glass containers
A glass container and a process for forming an inorganic silica coating on an exterior surface of the glass container to improve one or more surface characteristics of the glass container. A sol-gel solution including a polysilazane and an organic solvent is applied to the exterior surface of the glass container to form a sol-gel coating thereon. The glass container and the sol-gel coating are then exposed to a water vapor-containing environment and heated at a temperature of between 150 degrees Celsius and 600 degrees Celsius to transform the sol-gel coating into an inorganic silica coating. The as-formed silica coating has a hardness of greater than 8.5 GPa and is bonded to the exterior surface of the glass container through a plurality of siloxane bonds.

The glass container may include a first surface and a second surface opposite the first surface. The first surface may be an outer surface of the glass container. The coating may be positioned over at least a portion of the first surface of the glass container. The coating may include one or more polyimide compositions and one or more metal oxide compositions. The one or more polyimide compositions and the one or more metal oxide compositions may be mixed in the coating.
Modular hood for coating glass containers
A modular apparatus for coating glass articles with a chemical compound includes a coating hood section (10a) including a series of interconnected walls (12) defining an interior chamber (18, 20a, 20b) having an inlet (32) and an outlet (44), a blower (24) positioned at least partially in the interior chamber (18, 20a, 20b) to carry air from the inlet (32) towards the outlet (44); and a connector (50) for connecting the coating hood section (10a) to an identical coating hood section (10b). The connector (50) for connecting being defined on at least one of the interconnected walls (12) of the coating hood section (10a).
Vaporized metal application hood
A hood for depositing vaporized metals on glass container surfaces includes a vaporized metal source that produces vaporized metal; an enclosure, receiving one or more glass containers, comprising at least one side wall and at least one center section having a top above the glass containers; and one or more conduits that fluidly communicate the vaporized metal to an opening in at least one of the top of the center section and the side wall using one or more conduit fans.
Glass articles with low-friction coatings
Coated pharmaceutical packages are disclosed. The coated pharmaceutical packages may include a glass body formed from one of a borosilicate glass composition that meets Type 1 criteria according to USP <660> or an alkali aluminosilicate glass having a Class HGA 1 hydrolytic resistance when tested according to the ISO 720-1985 testing standard. A low-friction coating may be positioned on at least a portion of the first surface of the glass body the low-friction coating may include a polymer and a coupling agent disposed between the polymer and the first surface of the glass body. A coefficient of friction of the portion of the coated pharmaceutical package with the low-friction coating is at least 20% less than a coefficient of friction of a surface of an uncoated pharmaceutical package formed from the same glass composition.
GLASS ARTICLES WITH LOW-FRICTION COATINGS
Coated pharmaceutical packages may comprise a glass body formed from a borosilicate glass composition having a Type 1 chemical durability according to USP 660, the glass body having an interior surface and an exterior surface and a wall extending therebetween. A low-friction thermally stable coating having a thickness of ≤1 μm may be positioned on at least a portion of the exterior surface. The low-friction coating may comprise a silane. The portion of the exterior surface of the coated pharmaceutical package may have a coefficient of friction that is at least 20% less than an uncoated pharmaceutical package formed from the same borosilicate glass composition.
Methods for making coated glass articles such as coated glass containers
According to one or more embodiments disclosed herein, a coated glass article may be made by a method that includes applying a water-based coating mixture onto at least a portion of a first surface of a glass article, and heating the water-based coating mixture to form a coating on the first surface of the glass article, where the coating includes metal oxide and polymer. The water-based coating mixture may include comprise water in an amount of at least 50% by weight of the water-based coating mixture, a polymer or polymer precursor, and a metal oxide precursor.
