For example, a method for forming microchannels in a CMC component comprises laying up a plurality of body plies for forming a body of the CMC component; laying up a microchannel ply on the plurality of body plies that has at least one void therein for forming at least one microchannel; laying up a cover ply on the microchannel ply to define an outer layer of the CMC component; and processing the laid up body plies, microchannel ply, and cover ply to form the CMC component. In another embodiment, the method comprises applying an additive matrix to the body plies to define at least one microchannel. In still other embodiments, the method comprises machining at least one microchannel in the plurality of body plies.
Method for repairing ceramic matrix composite and ceramic matrix composite member
A method for repairing a target member including a ceramic matrix composite reinforced by ceramic fiber includes: a removal step of removing at least a part of a surface of the target member; an arrangement step of arranging a green body for repair which includes the ceramic fiber on a portion where the surface is removed in the removal step; an impregnation step of impregnating at least the portion of the target member where the green body for repair is disposed with slurry; and a sintering step of sintering the target member on which the green body for repair is disposed, after the impregnation step.
Method of forming CMC component cooling cavities
A method of forming a composite component. The method includes laying up a plurality of composite plies to form a composite ply core. Another step of the method includes partially processing the composite ply core to form a green state core. The method further includes machining a cooling cavity on an exterior surface of the green state core. Additionally, the method includes inserting a filler material within the cooling cavity. A further step includes wrapping composite plies around the green state core and filler material to secure the filler material and form an outer enclosure. In one step, the method includes processing the green state core and outer enclosure to form the composite component.
Method of making a fiber preform for ceramic matrix composite (CMC) fabrication
A method of making a fiber preform for ceramic matrix composite (CMC) fabrication that utilizes a fugitive binder and a machining step is described. The method includes, according to one embodiment, laying up a plurality of plies to form a stack, where each ply comprises an arrangement of fibers. The stack is infiltrated with a polymer at an elevated temperature to form an infiltrated stack that is cooled to form a rigid preform. The rigid fiber preform is machined to have a predetermined shape, such that a machined fiber preform is formed. A composite assembly including the machined fiber preform is formed and then the composite assembly is heated at a sufficient temperature to pyrolyze the polymer. Thus, a porous preform of a predetermined geometry is formed for further processing into a CMC.
CMC COMPONENT WITH INTEGRAL COOLING CHANNELS AND METHOD OF MANUFACTURE
A fiber-reinforced component for use in a gas turbine engine includes a fiber sleeve forming a cooling channel and a plurality of fiber plies enclosing the fiber sleeve, with the plurality of fiber plies forming first and second walls separated by the fiber sleeve. The fiber-reinforced component further includes a matrix material between fibers of the fiber sleeve and the plurality of fiber plies.
Self-healing matrix for a ceramic composite
A method for forming a self-healing ceramic matrix composite (CMC) component includes depositing a first self-healing particulate material in a first region of a CMC preform of the CMC component and depositing a second self-healing particulate material having a different chemical composition than the first self-healing particulate material in a second region of the CMC preform distinct from the first region.
CERAMIC MATRIX COMPOSITE COMPONENT HAVING LOW DENSITY CORE AND METHOD OF MAKING
Disclosed is a ceramic matrix component having a fibrous core and a ceramic matrix composite shell surrounding at least a portion of the fibrous core. The ceramic matrix composite shell comprises a fibrous preform. The fibrous core has a greater porosity than the fibrous preform. A method of making the ceramic matrix component is also disclosed.
Ceramic matrix composite turbine nozzle shell and method of assembly
A ceramic matrix composite turbine nozzle includes a primary outer nozzle platform; a primary inner nozzle platform; and an airfoil-shaped body extending between the primary inner and primary outer nozzle platforms. The body includes core plies defining a cavity; composite wrap plies circumscribing the core plies and defining an airfoil shape; a secondary outer nozzle platform in contact with the primary outer nozzle platform; and a secondary inner nozzle platform in contact with the primary inner nozzle platform. Each composite wrap ply has two layers of unidirectional fibers oriented transverse to each other and has first and second longitudinal edges. The first and second longitudinal edges are cut into fingers, which are folded in a transverse direction away from a turbine nozzle longitudinal axis and are interleaved between platform plies to define the secondary inner nozzle platform and the secondary outer nozzle platform.
CERAMIC MATRIX COMPOSITE COMPONENT AND METHOD OF PRODUCING A CERAMIC MATRIX COMPOSITE COMPONENT
A method of producing a ceramic matrix composite component. The method includes positioning a first plurality of ceramic matrix composite plies on top of one another, disposing a filler pack on the first plurality of ceramic matrix composite plies, and positioning a second plurality of ceramic matrix composite plies on top of the filler pack. One of the first plurality of ceramic composite plies or the second plurality of ceramic composite plies includes a bend angle, to define an interstice between the plurality of ceramic matrix composite plies with the filler pack disposed in the interstice. The filler pack includes one or more sacrificial fibers disposed therein, that subsequent to removal provide a functional feature, such as a cooling manifold in the filler pack. The method further includes forming one or more channels coupled to the one or more functional features for the flow of a cooling fluid therethrough. A ceramic matrix composite is also disclosed.
