Robotically-controlled surgical instrument with selectively articulatable end effector

Devices and systems are provided for controlling movement of a working end of a surgical device by means of a robotic system. In one embodiment, systems and devices are provided for moving an end effector on a distal end of a surgical fastening device. Movement can include rotational movement of the end effector about an axis of the shaft, articulation of the end effector relative to the shaft, and actuation of an end effector, e.g., closing, firing, and/or cutting.

A variable stiffness device includes a first elongated member including high-bending stiffness portions and a low-bending stiffness portion between adjacent high-bending stiffness portions, a second elongated member arranged along the first elongated member and including shape-memory members and a connecting member between adjacent shape-memory members, a heater to heat a shape-memory member in the low-bending stiffness portion to increase the bending stiffness, and a moving mechanism to move the second elongated member relative to the first elongated member. When the heater heats a first shape-memory member in the low-bending stiffness portion, a second shape-memory member next to the first shape-memory member is arranged in a high-bending stiffness portion.

An endoscope includes a flexible member and a variable stiffness apparatus installed in the flexible member. The variable stiffness apparatus includes a first longitudinal member and a second longitudinal member movable along the first longitudinal member. The first longitudinal member includes a first high bending stiffness portion and a first low bending stiffness portion. The second longitudinal member includes a second high bending stiffness portion, a second low bending stiffness portion, and a soft member arranged in the second high bending stiffness portion and the second low bending stiffness portion. Stiffness of part of the variable stiffness apparatus in a longitudinal axis direction is varied by changing a relative position of the first and second longitudinal members.

The subject invention pertains to percutaneous surgical device with variable stiffness for percutaneous procedures, including but not limited to pericardiocentesis, and flexible neurosurgical devices for procedures, including but not limited to intracerebral hemorrhage evacuation and third ventriculostomy and brain tumor biopsy, and methods of making and using them.

Shape Memory Support For Interventional Device Insertion Tubes

An invasive/interventional device or probe for use in an interventional medical procedure includes a control handle operably connected to an imaging system and an insertion tube. The insertion tube includes a first, proximal section operably connected to the control handle and a second, distal section operably connected to the first section opposite the control handle. The first section includes a stiff but flexible structure that can be manipulated to alter the shape of the first section, but that can retain the selected shape after being moved. The nature of the construction for the first section enables the first section to positioned as desired by the operator of the probe, and to retain that position until modified by the operator. The first section of the insertion tube allows the operator to manipulate only the second section during the procedure, reducing operator fatigue and increasing positional precision for the probe.

MULTI-LUMEN-CATHETER RETRACTOR SYSTEM FOR A MINIMALLY-INVASIVE, OPERATIVE GASTROINTESTINAL TREATMENT

Improved methods and devices for performing an endoscopic surgery are provided. Systems are taught for operatively treating gastrointestinal disorders endoscopically in a stable, yet dynamic operative environment, and in a minimally-invasive manner. Such systems include, for example, an endoscopic surgical suite. The surgical suite can have a reversibly-expandable retractor that expands to provide a stable, operative environment within a subject. The expansion can be asymmetric around a stabilizer subsystem to maximize space for a tool and an endoscope to each be maneuvered independently to visualize a target tissue and treat the target tissue from outside the patient in a minimally invasive manner.

Surgical devices and methods

A medical introducer includes an elongated tubular member having a proximal end, a distal portion, and a central lumen extending from the proximal end to a distal port in the distal portion. A frame structure is coupled to the distal portion of the elongated tubular member, where frame structure supports the distal portion of the elongated tubular member in a tapered shape and alternatively in a non-tapered shape. The elongated tubular member may include a rigid outer tube and a rigid inner tube carried in an interior lumen of the outer tube. The distal portion is typically a reinforced elastomeric tubular extension of the outer tube, and the reinforced elastomeric tubular extension may have a conical shape.

FLUID CONTAINER ADAPTERS

Various embodiments are generally directed to fluid container adapters that couple with a fluid container, so to enable access to the contents of the fluid container, such as from an endoscopic system via a tubing set. Several embodiments are particularly directed to a fluid container adapter that can couple with an opening in a variety of fluid containers to place one or more tubes in fluid communication with an interior of any particular one of the variety of fluid containers.

UNIVERSAL THREAD FLUID CONTAINER ENCLOSURE SYSTEMS

Various embodiments are generally directed to fluid container enclosure systems that couple with a fluid container and enable different systems, such as endoscopic systems, to access the contents of the fluid container, such as via a tubing set. The enclosure systems are configured to fit a wide range of fluid container necks, ports, or other openings, including various opening dimensions, thread finishes, and/or thread dimensions. In one embodiments, an enclosure system may include a cap having multiple carriages arranged therein. For example, a primary carriage may be arranged within the cap to engage with larger-dimensioned bottles. A secondary carriage may be arranged to float within the primary carriage to engage smaller-dimensioned bottles that bypass the primary carriage. Other embodiments are described.
