DIGITAL VISUAL ACUITY EYE EXAMINATION FOR REMOTE PHYSICIAN ASSESSMENT

Systems and methods for assessing the visual acuity of person using a computerized consumer device are described. The approach involves determining a separation distance between a human user and the consumer device based on an image size of a physical feature of the user, instructing the user to adjust the separation between the user and the consumer device until a predetermined separation distance range is achieved, presenting a visual acuity test to the user including displaying predetermined optotypes for identification by the user, recording the user's spoken identifications of the predetermined optotypes and providing real-time feedback to the user of detection of the spoken indications by the consumer device, carrying out voice recognition on the spoken identifications to generate corresponding converted text, comparing recognized words of the converted text to permissible words corresponding to the predetermined optotypes, determining a score based on the comparison, and determining whether the person passed the visual acuity test.

The present invention is a neutral cylinder refractor, which is a refractor that uses spherical power in combination with cylinder lenses to render them spherically neutral. Every cylinder lens in the refractor, excluding the Jackson Cross Cylinder, has corresponding spherical power added to it to neutralize the spherical equivalent of the cylindrical lenses. The invention can be used to measure the refractive error of a patient's eye, and specifically the cylinder aspect can be measured more easily due to a lack of interference from spherical equivalent.

PIGGYBACK INTRAOCULAR LENS THAT IMPROVES OVERALL VISION WHERE THERE IS A LOCAL LOSS OF RETINAL FUNCTION

Systems and methods are provided for improving overall vision in patients suffering from a loss of vision in a portion of the retina (e.g., loss of central vision) by providing a piggyback lens which in combination with the cornea and an existing lens in the patient's eye redirects and/or focuses light incident on the eye at oblique angles onto a peripheral retinal location. The piggyback lens can include a redirection element (e.g., a prism, a diffractive element, or an optical component with a decentered GRIN profile) configured to direct incident light along a deflected optical axis and to focus an image at a location on the peripheral retina. Optical properties of the piggyback lens can be configured to improve or reduce peripheral errors at the location on the peripheral retina. One or more surfaces of the piggyback lens can be a toric surface, a higher order aspheric surface, an aspheric Zernike surface or a Biconic Zernike surface to reduce optical errors in an image produced at a peripheral retinal location by light incident at oblique angles.

A vision stimulation platform is designed for stimulation of brain pathways and retinal cells for vision training and enhancement. Modules of eye exercises are provided to a user, where each module includes an ordered sequence of eye exercises to be performed by the user. The eye exercises comprise one or more screens showing an animated display for the user to view for a time period less than a threshold time (e.g., 10 seconds). The animated display has a color, movement, or pattern designed to stimulate a specific visual pathway of the brain or the retina of the user, and the set of displays is designed to achieve a purpose (e.g., eye relaxation, vision precision, stroke treatment, etc.). At least one of the eye exercises comprises an interactive portion for the user to interact with one or more items on the screen to test the motor cortex of the user.
