Biomarker of the colour perception of a mammal subject based on pupil frequency tagging

Evaluation of the perception of colors by mammals with a view to obtaining a characteristic biomarker of each tested subject takes advantage of the slow pupillary oscillatory response to generate an objective neurological signature of this perception of colors. A method based on pupil frequency tagging is used at a tagging frequency F.sub.tag adapted to the pupil response speed. A dynamic two-color stimulus is displayed, this stimulus comprising a two-color pattern the colors of which are inverted at the frequency F.sub.tag, one of the colors gradually varying in a range of possible values. From the pupillary response, a signal representative of the oscillation power of the pupil is generated. The minimum of this signal corresponds to the relative iso-luminance of the tested pair of colors.

Indication of extent to which color-blind person is unable to distinguish features within digital image

A color blindness-simulating digital image is generated from an original digital image. Wireframe versions of the original digital image and the color blindness-simulating digital image can be generated. A comparison digital image between the color blindness-simulating digital image and the original digital image is generated, such as by comparing the wireframe versions of the original digital image and the color blindness-simulating digital image to one another. The comparison digital image is indicative of the extent to which a color-blind person is unable to distinguish features within the original digital image.

Photobleaching method

The present disclosure provides an improved method for photobleaching an eye of a subject. The disclosed method may be used in a number of psychophysical test methods, including, but not limited to, measurement of dark adaptation. The improved method for photobleaching involves at least one of the following improvements: (i) the use of a bleaching light emitting a particular wavelength of light or a tailored spectrum of wavelengths; (ii) restricting or otherwise spatially tailoring the region of the retina that is subject to photobleaching; and (iii) utilizing a bleaching light having an intensity that is at or below the intensity of ambient daylight. The present disclosure additionally provides a combination of a photobleaching light and an apparatus to administer a psychophysical test suitable for use in practicing the disclosed methods.

Utilizing color light for focal stimulation of the macula for photobleaching and dark adaptation provides a means to isolate the recovery ability of different types of cones. Having the ability of selectively analyzing the recovery of different types of cones opens the opportunity to determine the effect of disease on cone type for diagnosis and monitoring of disease severity. An endpoint target with a noticeable difference between the center of the target and the peripheral ring of the target at endpoint is described.
