The processes involve functionalizing polyaromatic hydrocarbon molecules and/or polyheterocyclic molecules present in petroleum or petrochemical streams with epoxide. The epoxide functionalized poly aromatic feedstock can be further treated so as to effect oligomerization or polymerization. The oligomers or polymers may be thermoplastic or thermoset materials and may find use in, for example, infrastructure applications, composites, fillers, fire retardants and 3-D printing materials.
