There is provided a method of manufacturing an openly and highly porous thermoset foam, the method comprising the steps of mixing a thermosetting resin and crystals to form a mixture; applying pressure to the mixture to expel excess thermosetting resin, thereby producing a network of crystals touching each other with the thermosetting resin filling the interstices between the crystals of said network; curing the thermosetting resin in the mixture under pressure to produce a cured material; and contacting the cured material with a solvent for the crystals, thereby leaching the crystals out of the cured material, thereby obtaining said openly and highly porous thermoset foam. There is also provided a thermoset foam made of a thermoset and having a porosity of at least about 70%, wherein more than about 75% of the pores in the foam are connected to a neighboring pore.

Foam ink composition and 3D printed hierarchical porous structure

A foam ink composition for printing porous structures comprises stabilizing particles and gas bubbles dispersed in a solvent. The stabilizing particles comprise a predetermined interfacial energy so as to exhibit a contact angle with the solvent of from about 15 to about 90. At least a portion of the stabilizing particles are positioned at interfacial regions between the solvent and the gas bubbles, thereby stabilizing the gas bubbles in the foam ink composition. A 3D printed hierarchical porous structure comprises one or more continuous filaments arranged in a predetermined pattern on a substrate, the one or more continuous filaments comprising a sintered material and including a porosity of at least about 40 vol. %.

Production of fine-pored PMMA foams using nucleating agents

Fine-cell PMMA foams are produced using a production process including nucleators in addition to suitable blowing agents. It was found that, surprisingly, a simple-to-produce stable PMMA foam having very fine cells and very good properties can be produced.

Electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding composites and methods of making and using the same are described. The composites include high-loading-level ceramic particles distributed in a low-dielectric-loss matrix material having a dielectric loss tangent in the range of about 0.0001 to about 0.005. In one case, the composite includes CuO particles distributed in silicone. The composites exhibit dielectric absorber properties in the high frequency range.

Reversibly cross-linkable foam is provided. The reversibly cross-linked foam includes a first polymeric material, at least one reversibly cross-linkable monomer polymerized with the first polymeric material, and at least one blowing agent. The reversibly cross-linkable co-polymeric foam is thermally stable at temperatures of at least 10 degrees higher than otherwise identical polymeric foam that does not include the reversibly cross-linkable agent polymerized with the first polymeric material.

Heat-resistant polylactic acid continuously-extruded foamed material and preparation method thereof

An ethylene bis-12-hydroxystearamide grafted glycidyl citrate (EBH-g-ECA) and a preparation method thereof are provided; the EBH-g-ECA can be used as a multifunctional auxiliary agent in a polymer material, and particularly has a chain extension and a crystal nucleation effect in a polyester polymer material. A heat-resistant polylactic acid continuously-extruded foamed material containing EBH-g-ECA is further provided. The continuous foaming technology can be realized by using the heat-resistant polylactic acid foamed material, and the prepared foamed product has a high heat resistance, a uniform appearance, a low density, and complete biodegradation. A polylactic acid foamed material preparation method for a heat-resistant is provided, which is easy to be industrialized and has a great significance for realizing the large-scale replacement of petroleum-based plastic disposable foamed products such as PP and PS.

Anti-microbial foams containing polymer-stabilized silver nanoparticles

An absorbent wound dressing comprises a hydrophilic porous substrate and polymer-stabilized silver nanoparticles distributed throughout the porous substrate. The silver nanoparticles have a particle size d.sub.50 in the range of about 45 nm to about 85 nm and the silver nanoparticles are present in the substrate in an amount of about 0.16% to about 1.5% by weight of the total weight of the substrate. The wound dressing produces a 7-day log reduction of 4 or more for bacteria in accordance with the Modified AATCC Test Method 100. The wound dressing is also non-cytotoxic in accordance with ISO 10993-5 standard procedure for medical device cytotoxicity assessment.

Minimum Federal Safety Standards for corrosion control on buried oil & gas pipelines stipulate that metallic pipes should be properly coated and have impressed-current cathodic protection (ICCP) systems in place to control the electrical potential field around a protected pipe. In certain examples described herein, electrically-conductive composites can be used and provide intrinsically-safe materials without the dielectric shielding issues of existing materials used with pipelines. As reacted by customary spray applications, the nanocomposite foams described herein are directly compatible with ICCP functionality wherever foam contacts the metallic pipe. Various compositions and their use with underground and/or above ground pipelines are described.

A novel Aromatic Thermosetting Copolyester (ATSP) fully dense sheets can be processed by recycling the foam structure with unique combination of properties including mechanical strength and high temperature performance (compared to PEEK) to help improve part functionality, gain long-term reliability and cost savings. ATSP machinable plates can be used in valves, fittings, bearing, bushing, seals, aerospace parts and pump components.
