The novel yellow metal azo pigments based on at least two metal azo compounds which differ at least in the type of metal have both improved dispersion properties and improved colour strengths and are of excellent suitability for pigmentation of pigment preparations for a broad field of use.

A coloring composition includes a metal azo pigment, a compound having an ethylenically unsaturated bonding group, and a solvent, the metal azo pigment includes at least one kind of an anion selected from an azo compound represented by Formula (I) or an azo compound having a tautomeric structure of the azo compound represented by Formula (I), two or more kinds of metal ions, and a melamine compound, and in Formula (I), R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 each independently represent OH or NR.sup.5R.sup.6, R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 each independently represent ═O or ═NR.sup.7, and R.sup.5 to R.sup.7 each independently represent a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group. ##STR00001##

A composition for aqueous ink jet contains a specific dye which is one or more coloring materials selected from the group consisting of C. I. Acid Black 172 and C. I. Acid Black 194, and a specific aromatic compound which is at least one compound selected from the group consisting of compounds represented by formulae (1) to (4) below. The content of the specific aromatic compound relative to 100 parts by mass of the specific dye is 0.2 parts by mass or more and 50 parts by mass or less.
