A swellable silica microparticle with a nonionic polysaccharide deposition aid attached to its outer surface. Also a composition containing from 0.01 to 6 wt % of the swellable silica microparticles and a benefit agent.
Particles with color effect and compositions including the same
A particle is provided that includes a first material and a second material, arranged to provide a Fano resonance effect, for example in the visible portion of electromagnetic spectrum. The first and second materials may be substantially clear in the visible portion of the electromagnetic spectrum. The first material may include an inorganic material, such as SiO.sub.2, TiO.sub.2, HfO.sub.2, ZrO.sub.2, diamond, or a combination thereof. The second material may include a polymer. The first material has a first refractive index and the second material has a second refractive index, where the first refractive index and second refractive index have a difference of 0.5 or greater, and 1.0 or less. The first material may form a core and the second material may form a shell surrounding the core. Alternatively, the first and second materials may form a Janus particle, an asymmetric dimer, or an aggregate.
PRECIPITATED SILICA PRETREATED WITH A COUPLING AGENT AND POLYETHYLENE GLYCOL FOR A RUBBER COMPOSITION
A pretreated silica material includes silica particles, an organosilane coupling agent bonded to the silica particles, and polyethylene glycol contacting the silica particles. The pretreated silica material may be used in a rubber composition which also includes one or more vulcanizable elastomers and a curing agent. A tire tread or other part of a tire may be formed from the rubber composition.

Coated particles and methods of making and using the same
Improved silica based matting agents are disclosed. The matting agents are useful in waterborne coatings composition to provide exceptional properties to a wood based substrate. Films resulting on the coated substrate unexpectedly provide improved chemical resistance, thermal stress resistance, weather resistance, and/or film clarity to the surface of a wood substrate. Methods of making and using the matting agents are also disclosed.

The method for producing a surface-modified base material according to the present invention includes a step of bringing a base material having a polar group present on a surface thereof into contact with a hydrosilane compound having a molecular structure A and having a SiH group composed of a silicon atom of the molecular structure A and a hydrogen atom bonded to the silicon atom in the presence of a borane catalyst so as to allow a dehydrocondensation reaction to take place between the base material and the compound, thereby forming the base material surface-modified with the molecular structure A. This production method is capable of surface-modifying a base material at a lower temperature in a shorter time than conventional methods and allows a wide variety of options for the form, type, and application of the base material, the mode of the modification reaction, and the type of the molecular structure with which the base material is surface-modified.

ANTI-FOG COATING COMPOSITION INCLUDING FUNCTIONALIZED SILICA NANOPARTICLES AND MULTIFUNCTIONAL (METH)ACRYLATE MONOMERS
Coating compositions are described including silica nanoparticles functionalized with an alkenyl silane, a dispersing agent, and a compound including a polyethylene oxide segment containing at least one hydroxyl group, at least one silane, and optionally a hydrophobic group. The coating compositions further include at least two multifunctional (meth) acrylate monomers. Also described are articles including the dried and cured coating composition disposed on a substrate. The articles exhibit anti-fog characteristics and often also mechanical durability.
