Titanium Dioxide

The invention provides a method for preparing a dry titanium dioxide product, comprising the steps of: providing a dispersion comprising titanium dioxide particles; treating the titanium dioxide particles with a silane of formula (I):

R.sup.II(OR.sup.I).sub.aORSiX.sub.3  (I)

wherein R is a divalent C1-24 organic group that is carbon-bonded to the silicon atom, R.sup.I is a C2-6 alkylene group, R.sup.II is hydrogen, a C1-16 alkyl group, a C2-16 alkyl ether group, or a C2-12 acyloxy group, X is a hydrolysable group, and a is a number having a value from 3 to 150;
and then drying the dispersion to provide a dry titanium dioxide product.

The dry titanium dioxide product may optionally be dispersed within a vehicle.

Method for producing surface-treated colored inorganic particles

The present invention provides a method that enables production of a surface-treated colored inorganic particle with which the desired color tone can be consistently reproduced as intended with no variation occurring in the color tone of the compositions produced with the particle, within each production and over multiple production runs. The invention relates to a method for producing a surface-treated colored inorganic particle, comprising spray drying a mixture of a dispersion [I] and a solution [II], wherein the dispersion [I] is a dispersion of inorganic particles having an average particle diameter of 0.005 to 5 μm dispersed in a solvent with a pigment, and the solution [II] is a solution of a surface treatment agent hydrolyzed in the presence of a hydrolysis aid.

Metal oxide-polymer composite particles have a median particle size D50 of 40-75 nm or 100-150 nm and an average RTA of at least 0.06. Alternatively or in addition, metal oxide-polymer composites comprise two or more populations of metal oxide particles differing in size, particle size distribution, or shape. Alternatively or in addition, the use of a multicomponent hydrophobizing system including an alkylsilane to fabricate metal oxide-polymer composite particles increases the tribocharge of the composite particles.

PROCESS FOR THE PRODUCTION OF TITANIUM DIOXIDE, AND TITANIUM DIOXIDE OBTAINED THEREBY

A process for producing a particulate TiO.sub.2 includes supplementing metatitanic acid with an alkali compound in a quantity of 1200 ppm to 2400 ppm of alkali, with a phosphorus compound in a quantity of 0.1 wt.-% to 0.3 wt.-% by weight of P, expressed as phosphorus, and with an aluminum compound in a quantity of 1 ppm to 1000 ppm of Al, expressed as Al, to obtain a mixture. The quantity of the alkali compound, of the phosphorus compound, and of the aluminum compound are with respect to the TiO.sub.2 content. The mixture is calcined at a constant temperature of 940° C. to 1020° C. until a numerical fraction X.sub.50 of TiO.sub.2 has a primary crystallite size of at least 200 nm, to obtain a calcined mixture. The calcined mixture is cooled to obtain a cooled calcined mixture. The cooled calcined mixture is grinded to obtain the particulate TiO.sub.2.
