Composite particles having coated aggregates with low structure carbon black cores, coatings and inks with high resistivity and optical density, devices made therewith, and methods for making same
Composite particles that super-aggregates of coated aggregates having low structure carbon black cores and metal/metalloid oxide mantles are described. Coatings containing filler-polymer compositions which have the composite particles as filler, such as curable coatings and cured coatings or films formed therefrom containing the filler-polymer compositions, with combinations of high resistivity, good optical density properties, good thermal stability, high dielectric constant, and good processability, along with their use in black matrices, black column spacers, light shielding elements in LCDs and other display devices, also are described. Inks containing the composite particle are described. Devices having these compositions, components and/or elements, and methods of preparing and making these various materials and products are described.

Process for energy recovery in carbon black production
A combustible gas from carbon black production is utilized in a gas engine by adding an oxygen-containing gas to the combustible gas, passing said mixed gas over a selective catalyst, which is active for oxidizing H.sub.2S to SO.sub.2 but substantially inactive for oxidation of CO, H.sub.2 and other hydrocarbons with less than 4 C-atoms, passing the converted gas through an SO.sub.2 removal step, and passing the cleaned gas to a gas engine or to an energy recovery boiler. This way, the tail gas from carbon black production, which is normally combusted in a CO boiler or incinerated, can be utilized to good effect.
APPARATUS AND METHOD FOR PREPARING CARBON BLACK
Disclosed are apparatus and method for preparing carbon black, in which the carbon black may be continuously formed and activated. In one embodiment, carbon black powders formed in a combustion reactor are converted into a slurry which in turn is refluxed to the combustion reactor in a repeated manner, thereby to allow successive activation treatments. In this way, a sufficient residence time for the activation of the carbon black may be secured.
