AQUEOUS DISPERSIONS INCLUDING POLYESTER PARTICLES, PHOTOPOLYMERIZABLE COMPOSITIONS, ARTICLES, AND METHODS

The present disclosure provides an aqueous dispersion. The aqueous dispersion includes a) water; b) a surfactant having at least one ethylenically unsaturated group; and c) polyester particles dispersed in the water. The polyester particles include a water-insoluble polyester having a weight average molecular weight of 20 kiloDaltons or greater, and the polyester particles have an average diameter that is submicron in size. Further, the present disclosure provides a method of making the aqueous dispersion. The method includes a) dissolving a water-insoluble polyester in a water-immiscible solvent to form a polyester solution; b) combining the polyester solution with an aqueous solution including water and a surfactant; and c) removing at least a portion of the water-immiscible solvent to form the aqueous dispersion including polyester particles dispersed in the water. The present disclosure also provides a photopolymerizable composition including a) water; b) a surfactant; c) polyester particles dispersed in the water; d) a photoinitiator; e) at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer dispersed in the water; and f) an optional polymerization inhibitor. The present disclosure also provides coatings and articles prepared from the aqueous dispersion or photopolymerizable composition.

The problem to be solved by the present invention is to provide an effect pigment dispersion that exhibits excellent water resistance, that can form metallic or pearly luster, and that further exhibits high stability; and to provide a method for forming a multilayer coating film. The present invention provides an effect pigment dispersion that contains water, a wetting agent (A), a flake-effect pigment (B), and a phosphate-group-containing cellulose-based rheology control agent (C). The effect pigment dispersion has a solids content of 0.1 to 10 parts by mass, per 100 parts by mass of all of the components of the effect pigment dispersion; and has a viscosity of 100 to 10000 mPa.Math.sec as measured with a Brookfield viscometer at a rotational speed of 6 revolutions per minute.

The presently claimed invention relates to novel monomers which can be used for preparing polymers which are useful as dispersants for pigments and fillers, as wetting agent and as thickening agents in liquid compositions.

A biocide- and ammonia-free aqueous polymer dispersion is obtained by radically initiated multi-stage emulsion polymerization and comprising particles comprising at least a first polymer phase formed from a monomer composition I and a second polymer phase from a different monomer composition II. The first polymer phase has a glass transition temperature below 20 C., and the second polymer phase has a glass transition temperature above 20 C., both as determined by differential scanning calorimetry according to ISO 16805. The polymer dispersion further comprises at least one water-soluble alkali metal silicate, at least one water-soluble alkali metal or alkaline earth metal alkyl siliconate, or a mixture thereof and has a pH of 10.0 or higher.
