A water-based paint composition for pressurized, sealed aerosol can, and method to make same is disclosed. The composition contains up to 24% w/w propellant gas dimethyl ether (DME); up to 76% w/w coating material, consisting of 65-95% w/w nonvolatile content and 5-35% w/w volatile content. The volatile content contains 0-100% w/w water and additives, co-solvents and dispersing agents comprising altogether of 0-6% w/w volatile liquids, having 0-10% w/w, preferably 0-5% w/w volatile organic compounds (VOC) provided that the aggregate amount of DME and the VOC in volatile liquids remains below about 24% w/w calculated as DME, and nonvolatile content comprises 0-30% w/w color pigments and optional fillers, 45-99% w/w polyurethane modified alkyd resin or alkyd resin and additives up to 9% w/w. The resin is present as emulsified dispersion in water miscible preferably up to 5% w/w solvent comprising water and DME.

The present invention relates to latex paints containing a) a multistage carboxylated polymer latex binder obtainable by multistage aqueous emulsion polymerisation of at least one non-ionic monomer which is selected from C.sub.1-C.sub.20-alkyl esters of acrylic acid, C.sub.1-C.sub.20-alkylesters of methacrylic acid, and vinyl aromatic monomers; one or more monoethylenically unsaturated monomers M2, which are selected from monoethylenically unsaturated monocarboxylic acids having 3 to 6 carbon atoms and monoethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acids having 4 to 6 carbon atoms, and where in at least one stage, monomers M2 added in this stage is at least 6% by weight; b) a titanium dioxide pigment; c) a polymeric dispersant selected from monoethylenically unsaturated monocarboxylic acids having 3 to 6 carbon atoms and monoethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acids having 4 to 6 carbon atoms, where the monomers make up at least 85% of the monomers forming the polymeric dispersant; and d) a thickener polymer.

AQUEOUS DISPERSIONS AND EMULSION PAINTS COMPRISING ETHYLHEXYL ACRYLATE-BUTYL ACRYLATE-STYRENE COPOLYMERS

The present invention relates to an aqueous emulsion paint comprising a) 5% to 50% by weight of an aqueous polymer dispersion having a solids content in the range from 40% to 60% by weight, obtainable by the free-radical aqueous emulsion polymerization of a monomer mixture comprising ethylhexyl acrylate, butyl acrylate and one or more vinylaromatics, preferably styrene, b) 0.1% to 5% by weight of alkali metal alkylsiliconate and/or water-soluble silicate, c) 20% to 70% by weight of inorganic fillers, d) 0% to 30% by weight of at least one pigment, e) 0.1% to 10% by weight of customary auxiliaries, and f) water,
based in each case on the total amount of the emulsion paint, the pH of the emulsion paint having a value in the range from 10 to 12, and also relates to the aqueous polymer dispersions, to a process for the preparation thereof and to the use thereof as organic binders in emulsion paints having a high pH.

AQUEOUS DISPERSION OF POLYMER PARTICLES, MICROSPHERES, AND POLYSILOXANE PARTICLES

The present invention relates to a paint composition comprising an aqueous dispersion of a) polymer particles having an average particle size in the range of from 80 nm to 500 nm; b) polymeric organic crosslinked microspheres having a particle size in the range of from 1 μm to 20 μm; c) polysiloxane particles having a particle size in the range of from 1 μm to 30 μm; d) a rheology modifier; e) an opacifying white pigment having a refractive index of >1.9; and f) less than 10 weight percent of a low T.sub.g polyurethane. The composition of the present invention gives coatings with excellent burnish resistance.

Provided herein is a pigmented aqueous basecoat material including an aqueous polyurethane-polyurea dispersion (PD) having polyurethane-polyurea particles present in the dispersion, an average particle size (volume average) of 40 to 2000 nm, and a gel fraction of at least 50 wt %. The polyurethane-polyurea particles, in each case in reacted form, include: at least one polyurethane prepolymer containing isocyanate groups and including anionic groups and/or groups which can be converted into anionic groups, and at least one polyamine comprising two primary amino groups and one or two secondary amino groups. The aqueous basecoat material includes a specific solvent composition. Also provided herein is a method of using basecoat materials including the dispersion (PD) and multicoat paint systems produced using the basecoat materials.

In addition, the present invention is directed to a bismuth based pigment encapsulated by a layer of chelating agent.
