PROTECTING PARTS MADE OF CARBON-CONTAINING COMPOSITE MATERIAL FROM OXIDATION

A method of protecting a part made of carbon-including composite material against oxidation, the method including a) applying a coating composition on at least a portion of the outside surface of the part, the coating composition being in the form of an aqueous suspension including: a metallic phosphate; a powder of a compound comprising titanium; and a B.sub.4C powder; and b) applying heat treatment to the coating composition applied during step a) with a treatment temperature lying in the range 330 C. to 730 being imposed during the heat treatment in order to obtain a coating on the outside surface of the part, the coating including a first phase in which the metallic phosphate is in crystalline form and a second phase in which the metallic phosphate is in amorphous form.

Coating composition for reinforced protective layer

The disclosure relates to a coating composition comprising a resin system comprising an organic film-forming resin and optionally a curing agent reactive with the organic film-forming resin, a lithium salt with a solubility in water in the range from 0.01 to 120 g/L at 20 C., selected from the group consisting of lithium carbonate, lithium phosphate, lithium bicarbonate, lithium tetraborate, and lithium oxalate, and a zinc salt of 2,5-dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole (DMTD), wherein the zinc salt of DMTD is present as solid particles, the surface of which is at least partially covered by a layer of a film-formed polymer. The zinc salt of DMTD was shown to have a synergistic effect on reinforcement of barrier properties of a protective layer that is formed in a coating defect due to the presence of the lithium salt. In addition, the coating composition has an improved pot life.

One or more techniques are disclosed for a method for functionalized a graphitic material comprising the steps of: 1) providing a graphitic material; 2) providing a first molecule comprising a first group, a spacer, and a second group; 3) providing a second molecule comprising a third group, a spacer, and a fourth group, wherein the third group is a different group from the first group; and 4) bonding the first molecule and the second molecule to the graphitic material. Also disclosed is a tunable material composition comprising the functionalized carbon nanotubes or functionalized graphene prepared by the methods described herein.

The anti-corrosive pigment comprises at least one compound selected from the group consisting of a bivalent tin salt, a trivalent vanadium salt, a tetravalent vanadium salt, a tetravalent molybdenum salt, an oxycarboxylic acid salt, an ascorbic acid, a phosphorous acid salt and a hypophosphorous acid salt.

Aqueous compositions useful as pretreatments prior to painting and to reduce the formation of rust in the uncoated condition consist essentially of water, an organo-functional silane, a compound of a Group IV-B element, and optionally a polyvinyl alcohol, stabilizing agents, wetting agents, thickeners, and biocides, and have an alkaline pH>7. A process for treating a metal surface includes contacting the surface with such an aqueous composition. The compositions and processes were found to have further benefits in comparison to the zinc phosphate metal pretreatment thought to be the standard in the industry. Preferably, the pH of the compositions is alkaline, which has been found to improve the efficacy of a silane as a surface treatment to improve uniformity of paint adhesion. By operating in the alkaline pH range, it was found that flash rusting and/or blush rust were significantly reduced.

A conductive polymer corrosion protective composite is provided which may be used as a coating for imparting corrosion protection to structures such as turbine engine components. The composite comprises an organic-inorganic component and corrosion inhibitive pigments comprising an anodic corrosion inhibitor and a cathodic corrosion inhibitor. The anodic corrosion inhibitor may be selected from the group consisting of compounds of vanadium, molybdenum, tungsten, and mixtures thereof. The cathodic corrosion inhibitor may be selected from the group consisting of cerium, neodymium, praseodymium, and mixtures thereof.

The present disclosure provides an aqueous binder composition for forming a sacrificial corrosion-protective coating, said composition being free of chromates and also preferably free of borates and molybdates. Said binder composition advantageously has a pH of less than 6 and comprises a binder, particles of at least one metal oxide and at least one metallic phosphate, said binder comprising a hydrolyzed organosilane oligomer. In addition, the proportion by weight of said particles of at least one metal oxide relative to the total dry weight of said binder composition is greater than or equal to 75%.

A method of protecting an article from a downhole environment comprises growing carbon nanotubes on a surface of a substrate via a chemical vapor deposition process; the carbon nanotubes having a first end formed on the surface of the substrate and a second end extending away from the substrate; filling the spaces among the carbon nanotubes with a metallic material or a polymeric material forming a coated article; and exposing the coated article to a downhole environment.
