The invention is directed to a method of providing a protective coating composition that protects a refractory wall or lining from chemical attack by molten aluminum and molten alkali metals. The method includes the steps of coating a refractory wall or liner with an aqueous protective composition that includes, by weight of the solids, about 20-90% Al.sub.2O.sub.3 (excluding calcined alumina), about 15-55% SiO.sub.2 and about 1-15% of a metallic non-wetting agent; and evaporating the water before contacting the protective coating with the reactive molten metal.

Light blocking articles having opacifying layers

A light-blocking article is designed to be lightweight but effective to block most incident actinic radiation and can be designed into fabrics, curtains, and other materials. Such an article has an opacifying layer that is capable of blocking predetermined electromagnetic radiation. The article contains (a) porous particles comprising a continuous polymeric binder and pores within the continuous polymeric binder, the porous particles having a glass transition temperature of at least 25 C. and a mode particle size of at least 2 m and up to and including 50 m. The article also contains an opacifying colorant that absorbs the predetermined electromagnetic radiation (such as within 400 nm to 700 nm), in an amount of at least 0.001 weight % based on the total dry weight of the opacifying layer, and a matrix polymer in which the porous particles and opacifying colorant are dispersed.

At least one elongated cellulose layer is composed of Kraft paper having paper basis weight between 30 and 90 pounds and an average thickness between 0.003 and 0.009 inches. The elongated substrate has a first planar face and an opposed second planar face. A polymeric layer overlies at least a portion of the first planar face of the elongated substrate and comprises a polymeric blend of between 50 and 80 wt. % styrene butadiene copolymer and 0.2 and 3 wt. % of a cellulose ether compound. The cellulose ether compound comprises hydrogen or an alkyl group selected from the group consisting of methyl, ethyl, hydroxyethyl, hydroxypropyl carboxymethyl, hydroxyethyl methyl, hydroxypropyl and between 30 and 50 wt. % calcium carbonate and water.

In addition, in the present invention, there is provided a grain-oriented electrical steel sheet including: a base metal; and an insulation coating provided on a surface of the base metal, in which the insulation coating contains SiO.sub.2, and one or two of Al.sub.2O.sub.3 and MgO, and has a porosity of 10% or less.

A coat layer and a substrate layer are combined to prepare a transparent laminate film; the coat layer contains particles having a particle size distribution with a plurality of peaks in a particle size region of not less than 6 m, and of particle sizes corresponding to the plurality of peaks, the smallest particle size is larger than an average thickness of a flat portion of the coat layer. The transparent laminate film provides a comfortable writing experience and an excellent anti-glareness. The particles in the coat layer may contain small particles having a particle size of not less than 6 m and less than 12.5 m and large particles having a particle size of more than 12.5 m and not more than 20 m, and the average particle size of the small particles may be larger than the average thickness of the flat portion of the coat layer. The coat layer may further comprise a polyfunctional (meth)acrylate, and a urethane (meth)acrylate and/or a thermoplastic elastomer.
