The present invention relates to polymer stabilized nematic liquid crystal microlenses. The microlenses can be made from a nematic liquid crystal, a chiral dopant, a reactive monomer, and a photoinitiator. The microlenses can be prepared by spin coating a liquid crystal mixture onto an array including a nickel transmission electron microscope grid. The focal length of the microlens array can be tuned electrically.

The present invention relates to a PSA-mode liquid crystal display device including a polymer produced by polymerizing a polymerizable compound by energy ray irradiation in a state in which a mixture of the polymerizable compound and a liquid crystal composition is held between the first substrate and the second substrate, the polymer having a number-average molecular weight of 50,000 or more in terms of polystyrene. In a PSA-mode display device in which alignment of liquid crystal molecules substantially vertically aligned between the substrates is controlled by applying a voltage, a pre-tilt angle can be properly given without being inhibited. Therefore, the present invention provides a PSA-mode display device with good alignment stability, uniform alignment within the substrates, and no or suppressed display defects and a method for producing the same.

The present invention relates to liquid-crystalline media (LC media) having negative or positive dielectric anisotropy comprising self-alignment additives (SAMs) with an at least one bifunctional or polyfunctional anchor group, which effects the homeotropic (vertical) alignment of the LC media at a surface or the cell walls of a liquid-crystal display (LC display). The invention therefore also encompasses LC displays having homeotropic alignment of the liquid-crystalline medium (LC medium) without conventional imide alignment layers.
