Process for gasifying biomass with tar adsorption

A process and apparatus for gasification of biomass. Biogenic residue may be supplied to a heating zone to dry the biomass and allow the volatile constituents to escape to generate a pyrolysis gas. The pyrolysis gas is supplied to an oxidation zone and substoichiometrically oxidized to generate a crude gas. The carbonaceous residue generated in the heating zone and the crude gas is partially gasified in a gasification zone. The gasification forms activated carbon and a hot process gas. The activated carbon and the hot process gas are conjointly cooled. The adsorption process during the conjoined cooling has the result that tar from the hot process gas is absorbed on the activated carbon in the cooling zone. A pure gas which is substantially tar-free is obtained. The tar-enriched activated carbon may be at least partly burned for heating the heating zone and/or the gasification zone.

REACTIVITY-MODERATED BIOCARBON PELLETS

In some variations, the invention provides a biocarbon pellet comprising: 35 wt % to 99 wt % of a biogenic reagent, wherein the biogenic reagent comprises, on a dry basis, at least 60 wt % carbon; 0 wt % to 35 wt % water moisture; and 1 wt % to 30 wt % of a binder, wherein the biocarbon pellet is characterized by an adjustable Hardgrove Grindability Index (HGI) from about 30 to about 120, as shown in the Examples. The pellet HGI is adjustable by controlling process conditions and the pellet binder. The binder can be an organic binder or an inorganic binder. The carbon is renewable as determined from a measurement of the .sup.14C/.sup.12C isotopic ratio. Many processes of making and using the biocarbon pellets are described. Applications of the biocarbon pellets include pulverized coal boilers, furnaces for making metals such as iron or silicon, and gasifiers for producing reducing gas.

Method and apparatus for integrating pressurized hydrocracking of heavy oil and coke gasification

The present disclosure provides a method and an apparatus for integrating pressurized hydrocracking of heavy oil and coke gasification. A coupled reactor having a cracking section and a gasification section is used in the method: a heavy oil feedstock and a hydrogenation catalyst are fed into a cracking section, to generate light oil-gas and coke; the coke is carried by the coke powder into the gasification section, to generate syngas; a regenerated coke powder is returned to the cracking section; the syngas enters the cracking section and merges with light oil-gas, and enters a gas-solid separator, to separate out first-stage solid particles and second-stage particles in sequence, and a purified oil-gas product is collected; oil-gas fractionation of the purified oil-gas product is performed, and a light oil product and a syngas product are collected. Yield and quality of the light oil can be improved by the method.
