The lubricating oil composition for a shock absorber of the present invention contains (A) a base oil composed of a mineral oil and/or a synthetic oil, (B) a tertiary amine represented by the following general formula (I), and (C) a zinc dithiophosphate represented by the following general formula (II): ##STR00001## wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 each independently represent an aliphatic hydrocarbon group having from 1 to 5 carbon atoms, and R.sup.3 represents an aliphatic hydrocarbon group having from 12 to 24 carbon atoms in the general formula (I), ##STR00002## wherein R.sup.4 to R.sup.7 each independently represent one selected from an alkyl group and an alkenyl group each having 1 to 24 carbon atoms in the general formula (II).

An amount of the one or more metal dialkyldithiophosphate in the lubricant composition ranges from about 0.01 to about 0.10 percent by weight phosphorus based on a total weight of the lubricant composition. The lubricant composition has a total a total base number (TBN) of about 5.0 to about 10.0.

In the formula (1), R.sup.2 is a bivalent aromatic hydrocarbon group having 6 to 15 carbon atoms; and one of R.sup.1 or R.sup.3 represents cyclohexyl group and the other represents cyclohexyl group, an alkyl group having 8 to 22 carbon atoms or an aromatic hydrocarbon group having 6 to 12 carbon atoms. ##STR00001##

The nanoparticles include a core, a first shell disposed on the core, and a second shell disposed on the first shell. The first shell is formed from a siliceous material and the second shell is formed from a hydrophobic material. The first and second shells form functional coatings that reduce wear and friction of parts lubricated with the lubricant composition.
