This invention relates to the use of a metallic or non-metallic detergent which is a hydrocarbyl-substituted salicylic acid or a derivative thereof in a non-aqueous lubricant composition as an inhibitor of lead corrosion associated with ashless, organic ester, anti-wear additives and/or friction modifiers.

A lubricating composition includes a sulfurized oxy-substituted aromatic polyol compound and an oil of lubricating viscosity. A lubricating composition includes an oil of lubricating viscosity and a compound comprising a protected mercaptophenol. The protected mercaptophenol includes a mercapto group in which the hydrogen is substituted with a substituent of at least 5 carbons. The substituent is selected from hydroxy-substituted hydrocarbyl groups, poly(ether) groups, hydrocarbyl groups, and mixtures and salts thereof.

The present invention provides a refrigerating machine oil comprising a base oil; a sulfide compound; and an orthophosphoric acid ester, wherein a content of the sulfide compound is 0.01 to 2.0% by mass and a content of the orthophosphoric acid ester is 0.1 to 5.0% by mass, based on a total amount of the refrigerating machine oil, and the refrigerating machine oil having a kinematic viscosity at 40 C. of 3 to 500 mm.sup.2/s.

The present disclosure provides a method for preparing a sulfurized alkyl phenate product to achieve a high sulfurization ratio of sulfurized alkyl phenate to unsulfurized alkyl phenate/phenol in the context of a neutralized and optionally overbased additive. The sulfurized alkyl phenate product is obtained by sulfurizing an alkyl phenol with a sulfur chloride blend that includes about 40 to about 75 weight percent of sulfur dichloride.
