EXCLUSION DEVICE BEAMS AND RELATED METHODS
Exclusion devices for anatomical structures, and related instruments and related methods, are disclosed. An exclusion device for an anatomical structure may include a first beam, a second beam, and/or at least one spring operatively coupled to the first beam and the second beam to exert a closing force on the first beam and the second beam and bias the first beam and the second beam in a closing direction. The spring may be operatively coupled to the first beam by a crimp connection.
GUIDE TUBE SYSTEMS AND METHODS
Various systems and methods may guide, support, and/or house instruments. One exemplary system includes a guide tube having a manipulation section and mated with rails carrying instrument control members. Moving the rails with respect to the guide tube, or another point of reference, can control movement of the manipulation section.
Switch arrangements for ultrasonic surgical instruments
Ultrasonic surgical instruments including a handle housing, a switch frame, and a switch assembly are disclosed. The switch assembly may include a first switch arrangement movably supported on a distal portion of the handle housing and selectively movable relative to a first switch contact supported by the switch frame. The switch assembly may further include a second switch arrangement including a right switch button movably supported on a right side of the handle housing and selectively movable relative to a right switch contact supported by the switch frame, and a left switch button movably supported on a left side of the handle housing and selectively movable relative to a left switch contact supported by the switch frame. The first and second switch arrangements may be configured to be selectively actuatable by a single hand supporting the handle housing.
METHODS AND DEVICES FOR AUTO RETURN OF ARTICULATED END EFFECTORS
Various exemplary methods and devices for auto return of articulated end effectors are provided. In general, a surgical device can include an end effector configured to articulate. The device can include an actuator configured to be actuated to move the end effector from an articulated position to an unarticulated position. In at least some embodiments, the actuator can also be configured to be actuated to move the end effector from the unarticulated position to the articulated position. In at least some embodiments, the device can include the actuator and include another actuator configured to rotate the end effector about a longitudinal axis of an elongate shaft having the end effector at a distal end thereof. In at least some embodiments, the device can include the actuator and include another actuator configured to articulate the end effector from the unarticulated position to the articulated position.
SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR ACTIVATING A SURGICAL INSTRUMENT, AND FOOT SWITCH ASSEMBLY FOR CONTROLLING A SURGICAL INSTRUMENT
System (20) with a safety lock (21), the safety lock (21) being configured to at least partially prevent use of a surgical instrument (22). A foot switch assembly (1) is operably configured to control the surgical instrument (22), and has multiple switches (4; 10; 14; 15; 16). A memory (26) is present for storing a predetermined switch sequence associated with the switches (4; 10; 14; 15; 16) of the foot switch assembly (1), as well as a control unit (25) configured to determine whether a series of input switch actuations from the foot switch assembly (1) corresponds to the predetermined switch sequence, and if so, deactivating the safety lock (21) in response to the series of input switch actuations corresponding to the predetermined switch sequence. The invention also relates to various embodiments of a foot switch assembly for controlling a surgical instrument.
DEVICE WITH MOVABLE BUTTONS OR SWITCHES AND TACTILE IDENTIFIER
The present teachings provide for a device with a membrane and an underlying switch, an underlying switch actuator, or both that has a unique tactile pattern that is felt through the membrane when the membrane is aligned with the switch, switch actuator, or both, corresponding to the electrical state of the device. The membrane, the switch, the switch actuator or a combination thereof can be repositioned from a first position to a second position so that a different tactile feel is present through the membrane corresponding to a second electrical state.
Drive arrangements for articulatable surgical instruments
A shaft assembly for a surgical instrument that includes a movable drive member. In at least one form, the surgical instrument includes a spine assembly that is couplable to the surgical instrument and has a surgical end effector coupled thereto by an articulation joint. The shaft assembly in one form includes a proximal firing member and an intermediate firing member that is coupled to a distal firing member. The distal firing member is configured for selective travel through the surgical end effector. At least one articulation driver is coupled to the surgical end effector to apply articulation motions thereto. A clutch assembly interfaces with the primary and intermediate firing members and the articulation driver such that when in an articulation orientation, movement of the drive member results in movement of the articulation driver and when in a firing orientation, movement of the drive member results in movement of the intermediate and distal firing members. A separate articulation motor may be employed to actuate the articulation driver.
TENSION REGULATION OF REMOTELY ACTUATED INSTRUMENTS, AND RELATED DEVICES, SYSTEMS, AND METHODS
A surgical instrument includes a shaft with a proximal end and a distal end, a movable component coupled at the distal end of the shaft, a force transmission mechanism coupled at the proximal end of the shaft, and an actuation element with a first end coupled to the force transmission mechanism and a second end coupled to the movable component. The actuation element being configured to transmit an actuation force from the force transmission mechanism to the movable component. A coil spring is coupled to the actuation element between the first and second ends. First and second ends of the coil spring are coupled to longitudinally separated locations on the actuation element. The coil spring is configured to passively expand and contract in response to tension changes in the actuation element. A distance between the longitudinally separated locations changes as the coil spring passively expands and contracts.
Stapling instrument comprising independent jaw closing and staple firing systems
A surgical stapling instrument comprising an end effector movable between an open configuration and a clamped configuration, a closure drive configured to place said end effector in the clamped configuration, and a staple firing drive is disclosed. The stapling instrument further comprises a control system which utilizes the closure drive during a staple firing stroke of the staple firing drive to configure the end effector. The control system can also be operated to utilize the staple firing drive to close the end effector in lieu of the closure drive.
SURGICAL RETRACTOR INCLUDING NON-CONDUCTIVE MEMBRANE
A surgical retractor has a shaft having a proximal end portion and a distal end portion. A handle assembly is coupled to the proximal end portion of the shaft and an end effector is coupled to the distal end portion of the shaft. The end effector includes a retractor, a first arm is configured to articulate the end effector and a second arm configured to transition the retractor between an expanded state and a collapsed state.
