Systems and methods relating to medical applications of synthetic polymer formulations
Systems, methods and compositions relating to delivering synthetic polymer formulations to the body are described, which can be used by a range of medical personnel including those with minimal experience and training. Under some embodiments, the present invention relates to systems and devices for delivering polymer formulations to a body cavity (e.g. peritoneal cavity) to reduce or stop bleeding. Under some embodiments, an initial percutaneous access pathway is first formed using a delivery device with a probe and needle mechanism that automatically stops the advance of the device upon insertion into a body cavity or space, thus minimizing user error and improving patient safety. The hollow probe then allows transmission of polymer, mixed with gas and/or additional substances, from a holding chamber or canister to flow through the device and hollow probe into the patient's anatomic cavity or space of interest, stopping expansion when the device senses the appropriate pressure. Once reaching the body cavity, the polymer formulation functions to reduce and/or stop bleeding.
Implantable Embolic Scaffolds That Promote Healing
Implant devices and structures that reduce inflammation and promote healing of the area of implant. Specifically, the use of shape memory open cell biocompatible polymer foams for implants that assist in and promote healing and especially in filling and sealing aneurisms.
Surgical stapling buttresses and adjunct materials
A buttress material for use with a surgical staple cartridge. In various forms, the buttress material comprises a buttress body that is sized to be operably received on a deck of the surgical staple cartridge. The buttress body includes at least four edges and a central portion. At least two of the edges have a plurality of edge notches formed therein. The central portion may include a plurality of cutout openings therein.
Adjunct material with mating features
An adjunct material for use with an end effector for a surgical instrument is provided that has different types of features for mating with the end effector. The adjunct is configured to be releasably retained on a jaw, such as a cartridge or anvil, using a plurality of female features formed thereon. Each female feature is configured to encompass a corresponding at least one of male features formed on the jaw in a clearance fit such that the adjunct is able to move with respect to the jaw at least in a first plane parallel to the tissue-facing surface. The male and female features mate such that the adjunct is not retained in a second plane that is perpendicular to the first plane. The adjunct also includes at least one attachment feature configured to releasably retain the adjunct on the jaw.
ELECTROTAXIS-CONDUCIVE STAPLING
Surgical stapling devices have a metal coating on an anvil jaw member of the surgical stapling device, on a surface of staple pockets of a staple cartridge of the surgical stapling device, or any combination thereof. When the surgical stapling device is fired, the metal is transferred from the metal coating on the anvil jaw member, the staple pockets of the staple cartridge, etc., onto the staple. The resulting metal coating on the staple enhances healing of the tissue to which the staple is applied.
Anisotropic Wound Closure Systems
Novel compositions and systems for closure of wounds are disclosed. The compositions provide devices of improved flexibility and elasticity and are readily applied to wound sites or over wound closure devices. The present invention is also directed to a novel platinum catalyst for use in such compositions. The catalyst provides for rapid curing on topical surfaces such as skin and bonds to such surfaces in about 2-5 minutes.
Systems for venous occlusion for the treatment of venous insufficiency
Methods, devices and systems are described for treating venous insufficiency in which the vein is compressed at least partially along a treatment zone. A system can be provided including an injection device, such as a glue gun, that is operably connected to a delivery catheter that can be advanced across a treatment zone in the vein. The delivery catheter can be used to deliver one, two, or more boluses of media (e.g., cyanoacrylate) to occlude the vein along different spaced-apart sections of the treatment zone. External compression can also be applied to the vein by a compression element, such as a hand or multifunctional ultrasound transducer, to occlude portions of the vein along the treatment zone prior to or during the introduction of the boluses of media.
Enhanced Trocar
An enhanced trocar for laparoscopic surgery has a proximal end, a distal end, and a tubular trocar body connecting and extending between the ends. The trocar body is shaped and sized to receive inline and retain therein tissue isolated and divided during a laparoscopic surgical procedure, to permit a surgeon to remove such tissue from the surgical site and dispose of the removed tissue without an additional dedicated disposal device.
VASO-OCCLUSIVE DEVICES INCLUDING A FRICTION ELEMENT
Vaso-occlusive apparatuses, including implants, and methods of using them to treat aneurysms. The vaso-occlusive implants described herein include one or more soft and expandable braided member coupled to a pushable member such as a coil that maybe inserted and retrieved from within an aneurism using a delivery catheter as well as a friction element between the soft braided member and the coil. The friction element allows the relatively soft and elongate implant to be pushed out of a cannula without binding up within the cannula.
SCAR REDUCING WOUND CLOSURE MATERIALS
A composition comprising a wound-closure material physically or chemically associated with an agent that reduces scarring and improves the integrity of skin and underlying tissue in a mammalian subject. Methods for reducing or eliminating scarring or improving mammalian skin integrity comprise closing a wound with a composition, such as a suture material associated with a PHD inhibitor molecule, e.g., 1,4-DPCA.
