Artificial intervertebral impant
An apparatus and method for joining members together using a self-drilling screw apparatus or stapling apparatus are disclosed. The screw apparatus includes a shell and first and second first screw members having tapered ends and threaded bodies that are disposed within the shell. A drive mechanism rotatably drives the first and second screw members from the shell in opposite directions and causes the screw members to embed themselves in the members to be joined. The screw apparatus can be used to join members such as bones, portions of the spinal column, vertebral bodies, wood, building materials, metals, masonry, or plastics. The stapling apparatus includes first and second lever arms rotatably joined together at a fulcrum, and the lever arms rotate in opposite directions. First and second cartridges are disposed at the ends of the lever arms. Each cartridge is capable of holding a staple including a bracket, a nail member and an alignment slot. When the ends of the lever arms are rotated towards each other the staples from the cartridges are interlocked. The staples can be also be used to join members such as bones, portions of the spinal column, or vertebral bodies.
ADHESIVE FILM LAMINATE
A surgical stapler, or fastening instrument, may generally comprise a layer, such as a tissue thickness compensator, for example, releasably attached to a fastener cartridge and/or anvil by a flowable attachment portion. The flowable attachment portion may be indefinitely flowable. The flowable attachment portion may be flowable from the time that layer is installed to the fastener cartridge to the time in which the layer is implanted to patient tissue. The flowable attachment portion may comprise a pressure sensitive adhesive. The flowable attachment portion may comprise an adhesive laminate comprising a base layer comprising the tissue thickness compensator and an adhesive layer on at least a portion of a surface of the base layer comprising the pressure sensitive adhesive. Articles of manufacture comprising flowable attachment portion and methods of making and using the flowable attachment portion are also described.
ANVIL LAYER ATTACHED TO A PROXIMAL END OF AN END EFFECTOR
An anvil-attachable layer for use with a surgical stapler, or fastening instrument, wherein a proximal end portion of the layer is attached to a staple cartridge assembly, for example. The layer may be attached to the staple cartridge assembly by an adhesive, weld, or a staple-cartridge-based clamp, wherein the attachment is weak enough to allow the layer to pull away from the staple cartridge assembly with stapled tissue. Alternatively, the layer can include two or more lateral slits that define a connector region that can be cut by a knife of a surgical stapler to release the layer.
LAYER OF MATERIAL FOR A SURGICAL END EFFECTOR
In various embodiments, a layer of material can comprise a body, a proximal end portion, and a distal end portion. The proximal end portion can be releasably secured to a staple cartridge of a surgical end effector, and the distal end portion can be releasably secured to an anvil of the surgical end effector. The layer of material can comprise a tissue thickness compensator.

Method and apparatus for clamping tissue and occluding tubular body lumens
A fastener or clamp for securing a tissue layer to another tissue or non-tissue layer has a proximal implant and a separate distal implant, connectible to each other, each implant having radially deployable legs that can engage the layers between the deployed legs, the legs being configured so that when the implants are connected, the legs of the proximal and distal implants are interdigitated in the absence of tissue.
Tendon repair apparatus
An apparatus for coupling two elongated tissue portions of a subject, such as two portions of a ruptured tendon, comprising first and second repair elements, each repair element comprising a distal end configured for insertion into the tissue portion, an elongated body configured to extend axially within the tissue portion and to engage the tissue, and a proximal end. In some embodiments, at least one of the first and second repair elements comprises, at the proximal end, an integrally formed connector for coupling the proximal end of the first repair element to a proximal end of the second repair element, to attach between the two tissue portions.
DEVICES AND METHODS FOR CLOSING A LEFT ATRIAL APPENDAGE
Using a delivery system, a disk is introduced into a left atrium (LA) of a heart of a subject. The left atrial appendage (LAA) is everted into the LA by, the from within the LAA, grasping tissue of the LAA, and pulling the LAA through an ostium of the LAA and into the LA. Within the LA, the disk is expanded, and the perimeter of the everted LAA is sandwiched between a periphery of the disk and the wall around the ostium such that the everted LAA covers the ostium. The everted LAA is secured covering the ostium by anchoring the periphery of the disk around the perimeter of the everted LAA. Other embodiments are also described.
FIXATION DEVICES, SYSTEMS AND METHODS FOR ENGAGING TISSUE
System for fixation of leaflets of a heart valve including a delivery catheter having an elongated shaft, a proximal end portion and a distal end portion configured to be positioned proximate native leaflets of a heart valve from a remote vascular access point, the delivery catheter further includes a rotatable actuator rod having a threaded fastener at a distal end thereof, and a fixation device releasably coupled by a threaded connection to the threaded fastener of the actuator rod. The fixation device includes a first arm moveable between a closed position and an open position, a second arm moveable between a closed position and an open position. The fixation device further includes a first gripping element movable relative to the first arm in the open position, the first gripping element biased toward the first arm to capture a first leaflet of the heart valve therebetween, and a second gripping element movable relative to the second arm in the open position, the second gripping element biased toward the second arm to capture a second leaflet of the heart valve therebetween. The first gripping element and the second gripping element each includes a plurality of barbs extending therefrom, the plurality of barbs of each of the first gripping element and the second gripping element being aligned transversely in at least one row. The fixation device further includes a covering disposed on each of the first gripping element and the second gripping element, wherein the plurality of barbs of the first gripping element and the second gripping element, respectively, protrude through the covering.
SURGICAL END EFFECTOR HAVING BUTTRESS RETENTION FEATURES
A piece of buttress material and an end-effector of a surgical instrument including features which can aid a surgeon in properly and quickly attaching the piece of buttress material to the end-effector. In various embodiments, a piece of buttress material can include retention features which can be engaged with portions of an end-effector to releasably retain the piece of buttress material to at least a portion of the end-effector. Similarly, an end-effector can include features configured to engage portions of a piece of buttress material to releasably retain the piece of buttress material to the end-effector. In at least one embodiment, more than one piece of buttress material can be releasably retained to an end-effector.
