During operation the sonotrode extends through the through opening of the guide shaft and the distal end of the guide shaft is situated on a distal side of the most distal node position of the sonotrode. The sonotrode and the guide shaft are adapted to each other for radial clearance between the sonotrode and the guide shaft to be a minimum for a sonotrode portion comprising the most distal node position.

A button disposed on and pivotably attached at a resilient member to the button pressing portion of the exterior of the body, with the button being proximal to the tool engaging portion. The button has a button bore and a boss extending from the button bore into the transverse bore which is alignable with the longitudinal bore. The button is disposed on the body to be thumb pressable, the button suitable for selectively engaging a corresponding groove on surgical tool.

The console includes a display on which representations of the footswitch and handpieces connected to the console are presented. The representations of the handpieces are in different colors. When the footswitch is mapped to a specific handpiece, the representation of the footswitch is presented in the same color as the representation of the handpiece to which the footswitch is mapped. When plural footswitches are attached to the console, the representation of each footswitch is presented in a color corresponding to the color of the representation of the handpiece to which the footswitch is mapped.

The connector piece (3), the ring, and the envelope interact in order to form a leaktight barrier between the inside and the outside of the envelope (1) in the area of the opening (12).
