The present invention concerns a two-part sizing composition comprising: (A) A precursor comprising: (a) An aminosilane (e.g. A1100) and (b) a polymer or copolymer containing carboxylic acid and/or anhydride, both having a functionality, F≧3, and (B) A binder comprising a multi-functional epoxy resin of functionality, F≧3. Glass fibres sized with the reaction product of the above composition yield a higher resistance to hydrolysis of polymeric matrix composite materials reinforced with such fibres. The sizing composition of the present invention is particularly advantageous for use with polyester resins, such as PET.

POLYVINYL ALCOHOL-SIZED FILLERS FOR REINFORCING PLASTICS

A sized reinforcing filler, comprising a filler and a sizing agent disposed on at least a portion of the filler, to be used for reinforcement for plastics is disclosed. The sizing agent is based upon at least one of a polyvinyl alcohol, an ethylene/vinyl alcohol copolymer, a silane-grafted polyvinyl alcohol and a silane-grafted ethylene/vinyl alcohol copolymer, a silane-grafted polyvinyl alcohol and a silane-grafted ethylene/vinyl alcohol copolymer. The polyvinyl alcohol is useful as a size for all types of fibers and particles to reinforce all types of commodity and engineering plastics, particularly polyolefin resins, to form polymer composites. As such, polymer composites reinforced with such sized reinforcing fillers, as well as articles, components, and products including such polymers composites, are also disclosed.

FILLED RADIATION CURABLE COMPOSITIONS FOR COATING OPTICAL FIBER AND THE COATINGS PRODUCED THEREFROM

Described herein are radiation curable compositions for coating optical fibers including a reactive oligomer with at least one polymerizable group and a backbone, a reactive diluent monomer, a photoinitiator, optionally one or more additives, and a filler component. Such compositions are configured to possess specified liquid glass transition temperatures and/or viscosity ratios when measured between 25, 55, and/or 85 degrees Celsius. Also described are compositions wherein the filler component is present in specified amounts and/or sizes, and contains specified types of filler constituents. Also described are optical fibers coated from such compositions, optical fiber cables including optical fibers coated from such compositions, and methods of producing coated optical fibers from such compositions.

A composite yarn comprising a continuous multifilament core yarn incorporated in a matrix is characterised in that the matrix comprises at least one polymer material and at least one reinforcing filler, the reinforcing filler being formed from functionalized particles, said particles having a median size (d.sub.v5o) of less than 40 μm. A process for manufacturing such a composite yarn, comprises at least one step of depositing, by coating or extrusion, a matrix comprising a polymer and a reinforcing filler, onto a core yarn. A textile surface comprises at least one such composite yarn.

Sizing composition for wet use chopped strand glass fibers

A sizing composition including water, a polyvinylpyrrolidone film former, a silane coupling agent, a lubricant, and a surfactant is provided. The polyvinylpyrrolidone film former constitutes from 30 wt. % to 50 wt. % of the dry solids of the sizing composition. Wet use chopped strand glass fibers for use in reinforcing gypsum board are also provided. The wet use chopped strand glass fibers include chopped glass fibers having the sizing composition applied thereto. The sizing composition improves fiber bundle integrity, fiber flow rate, fiber flow rate consistency, and dispersibility of the wet use chopped strand glass fibers in a gypsum matrix or slurry.
