The aluminum content is 98.0% by mass or more as an oxide (Al.sub.2O.sub.3) in 100% by mass of the precursor of an alumina sintered compact; the yttrium content is 0.01 to 1.35 parts by mass as an oxide (Y.sub.2O.sub.3) based on 100 parts by mass of the content of the aluminum as an oxide; the total content of the metals selected from the foregoing group is 0.02 to 1.55 parts by mass as an oxide based on 100 parts by mass of the content of aluminum as an oxide; and the aluminum is contained as α-alumina. Also disclosed is an alumina sintered compact, and a method for producing an alumina sintered compact and for producing abrasive grains.
Partially shaped abrasive particles, methods of manufacture and articles containing the same
Various embodiments disclosed relate to a partially shaped abrasive particle. The partially shaped abrasive particle includes a shaped portion, engineered to have a polygonal shape, and an irregular portion. The irregular portion is coupled to a base of the shaped portion, forming a single partially shaped abrasive particle.

Nano-porous corundum ceramics and methods of manufacture are disclosed. The method of forming nano-porous corundum ceramics includes milling corundum powder in aqueous slurry with beads. The method further includes processing the slurry by a liquid shaping process to form a gelled body. The method further includes sintering the gelled body between 600° C. to 1000° C.

Method of making rod-shaped particles for use as proppant and anti-flowback additive
A method for forming rod-shaped particles includes reducing a length of rods derived from a slurry made up of particles and a reactant, wherein the rods are in a stabilized state in which the reactant has been at least partially reacted with a coagulant, but the rods have not been sintered, and subsequently sintering the reduced length stabilized rods. The reducing the length of the stabilized rods includes subjecting the stabilized rods to mechanical vibration applied by a device, or feeding the stabilized rods through a device having a rotating cutting mechanism.

An elongate shaped abrasive particle comprises an elongate shaped ceramic body having opposed first and second ends joined to each other by at least two longitudinal sidewalls. At least one of the at least two longitudinal sidewalls is concave along its length. At least one of the first and second ends is a fractured surface. Methods of making elongate shaped abrasive particles and abrasive articles including them are also disclosed.
SIALON SINTERED BODY AND CUTTING INSERT
A sialon sintered body and a cutting insert each having thermal shock resistance and VB wear resistance. The sialon sintered body and the cutting insert contain β-sialon and 21R-sialon and exhibit an X-ray diffraction peak intensity ratio R[(I.sub.21R/I.sub.A)×100] of 5% or greater and smaller than 30%, wherein I.sub.A represents the sum of the peak intensities of the sialon species, and I.sub.21R represents the peak intensity of 21R-sialon, the ratio being calculated from the peak intensities of the sialon species obtained by using X-ray diffractometry.
