A method for forming a refractory component of foundry system includes forming a preform from a refractory mixture. The refractory mixture includes a silicon carbide preceramic polymer and at least one of a refractory powder or refractory aggregate. The method further includes heating the preform to pyrolyze the silicon carbide preceramic polymer and form a refractory material defining the refractory component. The resulting refractory material includes at least one of the refractory powder or the refractory aggregate in a silicon carbide matrix. The refractory component defines an oxidation-resistant surface configured to contact molten metal.

The invention relates to a use of a refractory material for contact with a liquid metal or alloy, a method for the manufacture of an article made of said material, the article so obtained and a method of use of said article. The refractory material is obtained from a mixture comprising from 0 wt. % to 40 wt. % of aggregates and/or fmes of zirconia; from 10 wt. % to 50 wt. % of aggregates and/or fmes of alumina; and from 20 wt. % to 50 wt. % of aggregates and/or fines of mullite; formed into a desired shape and then subjected to a heating treatment at a temperature of from 750 C. to 1500 C.

BONDED ZIRCONIA REFRACTORIES AND METHODS FOR MAKING THE SAME

Disclosed herein are methods for making a bonded refractory material, the methods comprising preparing a slurry comprising glass precursor particles having an average particle size ranging from about 1 nm to about 200 nm; combining zirconia particles with the slurry to form a batch composition comprising at least about 80% by weight of zirconia; forming a green body from the batch composition; and sintering the green body to form a sintered refractory material. Sintered high-zirconia refractory materials can comprise at least about 80% by weight of zirconia having an average grain size of 100 microns or less, wherein the zirconia is interspersed in a glassy phase, and wherein the sintered refractory materials comprise about 15% or less by weight of the glassy phase. Melting vessels having at least one interior surface comprising such sintered zirconia refractory materials are further disclosed herein.

A device and method of reclaiming refractory material from a lining of a refractory includes assembling a first refractory component of the lining with a first refractory product, and assembling a second refractory component of the working lining with a second refractory product different from the first refractory product, the second refractory product including magnetic material dispersed therein. Upon the lining reaching a service life, the lining is demolished to produce a mixture of the first refractory component pieces and the second refractory component pieces. Magnetic separation is performed on the mixture to separate the second refractory component pieces from the first refractory component pieces.
