The process comprises a new direct process to obtain the intermediate dimethyl 5-hydroxy-3,6-dihydropyridine-1,4(2H)-dicarboxylate or the intermediate diethyl 5-hydroxy-3,6-dihydropyridine-1,4(2H)-dicarboxylate.
