A hydrophobic treatment method is used in which at least one sheet filled with a gelled silicic acid is tilted at least two degrees with respect to a horizontal direction in a hydrophobizing solution, and the gelled silicic acid is hydrophobized. A manufacturing method for a sheet-like member is also used. The manufacturing method includes: a sol preparing step of adjusting the pH of a water glass aqueous solution to obtain a sol solution of silicic acid; an adding step of adding the sol solution to a fiber; a gel step of polymerizing and gelling the sol solution; a hydrophobic treatment step of hydrophobizing the gel with the hydrophobic treatment method; and a drying step of drying the hydrophobized gel.

A formulation and methods for making high energy organic fuels that incorporate suspended metal particles with metal particle sized ranging from 33 nm to 5 micron. The hybrid organic fuels contain superior density and/or energy content to conventional liquid organic fuels. These hybrid organic fuels used in combination with metal particle afford fuels with 5 to 80% more net heat of combustion (based on volume). These fuels should extend the distant range for jets, liquid rocket engines, SCRAM jet engines, and improve energy content in fuel-air explosive applications such as fuel-air explosives and in the Multi-Effects Weapons System (MEWS) where the fuel is used both for propulsion and explosive effects.

Metal-organic framework (MOFs) compositions based on postsynthetic metalation of secondary building unit (SBU) terminal or bridging OH or OH.sub.2 groups with metal precursors or other post-synthetic manipulations are described. The MOFs provide a versatile family of recyclable and reusable single-site solid catalysts for catalyzing a variety of asymmetric organic transformations, including the regioselective boryiation and siiylation of benzyiic CH bonds, the hydrogenation of aikenes, imines, carbonyls, nitroarenes, and heterocycles, hydroboration, hydrophosphination, and cyclization reactions. The solid catalysts can also be integrated into a flow reactor or a supercritical fluid reactor.

A nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery includes a positive electrode, a negative electrode, and a nonaqueous electrolyte. The positive electrode includes a positive electrode active material, and the positive electrode active material includes a lithium-transition metal composite oxide containing Ni, Mn, and Al. The proportions of Ni, Mn, and Al in metal elements other than Li contained in the lithium-transition metal composite oxide are, respectively, Ni: 50 atm % or more, Mn: 10 atm % or less, and Al: 10 atm % or less. When the lithium-transition metal composite oxide contains Co, the proportion of Co in the metal elements other than Li is 1.5 atm % or less. The nonaqueous electrolyte contains an oxalate compound, and the oxalate compound contains a lithium cation and an oxalate complex anion.
