Robotic shoulder fracture management

A method of repairing a fractured humerus may include implanting a prosthetic humeral stem into a humeral canal of the fractured humerus. First and second tuberosities of the fractured humerus may be robotically machined to include first and second implant-facing surfaces that are substantially negatives of first and second surface portions of the proximal end of the prosthetic humeral stem. The first and second tuberosities may be machined so that the first and second tuberosities have first and second interlocking surfaces shaped to interlock with each other. During implantation, the first and second implant-facing surfaces are in contact with the first and second surface portions of the proximal end of the prosthetic humeral stem, and the first interlocking surface interlocks with the second interlocking surface.

Systems and methods for collision detection and avoidance

Systems and methods for collision detection and avoidance are provided. In one aspect, a robotic medical system including a first set of links, a second set of links, a console configured to receive input commanding motion of the first set of links and the second set of links, a processor, and at least one computer-readable memory in communication with the processor. The processor is configured to access the model of the first set of links and the second set of links, control movement of the first set of links and the second set of links based on the input received by the console, determine a distance between the first set of links and the second set of links based on the model, and prevent a collision between the first set of links and the second set of links based on the determined distance.

Robotic surgical systems and methods of use thereof

A method of performing bariatric surgery using a robotic surgical system includes positioning a gastrectomy device in a selected location in a stomach; applying an adherent material to the stomach along a desired transection line; and cutting the stomach along the desired transection line delineated by the adherent material.

CONTROL AND FEEDBACK BASED ON INSERTION FORCE

A machine is configured to access force data generated by a force sensor, where the force sensor is communicatively coupled to a proximal portion of a flexible elongate device that has a distal portion configured to travel within an environment, and where the force sensor is configured to detect forces and generate the force data therefrom. The machine, based on the force data, identifies an insertion force encountered by the distal portion of the flexible elongate device from among the forces detected by the force sensor. The machine then, based on the identified insertion force, initiates a responsive operation performed by a control system communicatively coupled to the flexible elongate device.

SURGICAL INSTRUMENTS FOR APPLYING MULTIPLE CLIPS

A surgical instrument for applying surgical clips to tissue comprises an end effector having first and second jaws that are movable between open and closed positions and configured to receive first and second rows of clips in the open position. The instrument further includes an actuator coupled to the end effector and configured to move the jaws into the closed position and to discharge the first and second rows of clips. This allows an operator to apply multiple rows of clips to tissue with a single instrument insertion, which obviates the need to remove the surgical instrument from the cannula to manually reload a new cartridge, thereby reducing the overall time of the surgical procedure.
