Surgical end effector assembly including a connector strip interconnecting a plurality of staples
A surgical staple cartridge is disclosed comprising a plurality of staples removably stored within the surgical staple cartridge. The staples comprise staple legs which extend from a staple base portion. The staple legs comprise staple tips configured to pierce tissue and contact a corresponding forming pocket of an anvil of surgical stapling instrument. The staples further comprise zones having different hardnesses.
DISSIMILAR STAPLE CARTRIDGES WITH DIFFERENT BIOABSORBABLE COMPONENTS
Stapling devices and staple cartridges are disclosed. A stapling device can include a jaw configured to sequentially receive a plurality of dissimilar staple cartridges having different bioabsorbable components. An adjustment module can implement a firing control algorithm based on which dissimilar staple cartridge is received in the jaw. A staple cartridge can include staples comprised of a bioabsorbable metal alloy and configured to degrade at a staple degradation rate over an expected staple life in the patient. A staple cartridge can also include an implantable layer comprised of a bioabsorbable polymer and configured to degrade at a layer degradation rate over an expected layer life in the patient. The staple degradation rate and the implantable degradation rate can be different. The implantable layer can mechanically support at least a portion of a staple for a time in the expected staple life.
METHOD FOR DELIVERING A STAPLE IN SITU PAIRED TO THE IN SITU ENVIRONMENT
A method of pairing bioabsorbable staples in a staple cartridge with the tissue being treated such that the staples are structurally sufficient during the healing window of the tissue but completely bioabsorb shortly thereafter.
SURGICAL STAPLING INSTRUMENT WITH CURVED END EFFECTOR ASSEMBLY
A curved cartridge assembly of a surgical stapler includes a staple cartridge, an alignment pin received in the staple cartridge and configured to engage an opening in an anvil assembly, and a shipping cap configured to detachably couple to the staple cartridge. The shipping cap has is engaged with the distal end portion of the alignment pin to resist translation of the alignment pin. With the cartridge assembly loaded into the surgical stapler, upon releasing the shipping cap from the staple cartridge the alignment pin translates into engagement with the opening in the anvil assembly.
Surgical stapler cartridge retainer with ejector feature
An apparatus includes an elongate body, at least one latch member, and a cartridge removal feature. The elongate body is sized and shaped to correspond with a deck of a surgical staple cartridge such that the elongate body is configured to cover a plurality of staple apertures of the surgical staple cartridge. The at least one latch member is configured to removably secure the elongate body to the surgical staple cartridge. The cartridge removal feature is integral with the elongate body. The cartridge removal feature defines a gap that is configured to receive a portion of the surgical staple cartridge. The cartridge removal feature is further operable to remove the surgical staple cartridge from a surgical stapler.
BIOABSORBABLE STAPLE COMPRISING MECHANISMS FOR SLOWING THE ABSORPTION OF THE STAPLE
A surgical staple comprising a substrate and one or more coatings which slows the bioabsorption of the substrate. The coating can be selected so as to affect the environment surrounding the staple once the staple is implanted in the patient. The effect on the environment can cause the bioabsorption to occur within a desired time frame.
STAPLING DEVICE WITH CARTRIDGE ASSEMBLY WITH ALIGNMENT PINS
A surgical stapling device includes an anvil assembly and a replaceable cartridge assembly. The cartridge assembly includes a knife blade and upper and lower alignment pins for retaining tissue between anvil and cartridge assemblies to ensure that the knife blade cuts cleanly through tissue. The cartridge assembly includes a cartridge body having guide structure for guiding the cartridge assembly onto a clamp slide assembly of the stapling device.
COUPLING FEATURE FOR CIRCULAR SURGICAL STAPLER END EFFECTOR
A surgical stapling instrument includes a body member having a distal end. The distal end is configured to be fixedly secured to an annular deck member having a plurality of staple openings. The body member is configured to slidably house a staple driver member. The body member includes a radially expandable collar having at least one latching feature. The surgical stapling instrument also includes a shaft assembly, including a proximal sheath portion, a distal sheath portion, and at least one protrusion extending radially outwardly from the distal sheath portion. The at least one protrusion includes at least one abutment surface configured to engage the at least one latching feature of the radially expandable collar for coupling the body member to the shaft assembly.
SURGICAL STAPLING DEVICE WITH DISPOSABLE CUTTING PLATE
A surgical stapling device (10) includes an anvil (22) and a reload assembly (50) that includes a cartridge assembly (20) and a cutting plate (54). The reload assembly (50) is removably coupled to the stapling device (10) to facilitate replacement of the cartridge assembly (20) and the cutting plate (54) on the stapling device (10). In certain aspects of the disclosure, the reload assembly (50) also includes a shipping cap (52) that is supported on the cartridge assembly (20) and supports the cutting plate (54).
Fastener cartridges including extensions having different configurations
A fastener cartridge can include, one, a cartridge body comprising a deck and a plurality of fastener cavities and, two, a plurality of fasteners positioned in the fastener cavities. The cartridge body can further comprise extensions extending from the deck having different sizes and/or configurations. The extensions can control the flow of tissue relative to the deck and/or support the fasteners as they are ejected from the fastener cavities.
