The present disclosure provides a laundry care composition having at least one laundry care ingredient and at least one leuco composition conforming to Formula (I):

wherein Ar.sup.2 and Ar.sup.3 are independently a carbocyclic aryl or heteroaryl, and Ar.sup.1 is selected from the group consisting of: unsubstituted phenyl, electron deficient carbocyclic aryl, and heteroaryl. The present disclosure also provides a method of determining an authentic laundry care composition and test kits for detecting authentic laundry care compositions.

A composition comprises a plurality of triarylmethane leuco molecules. The triarylmethane leuco molecules comprise a first alkyleneoxy moiety and a second oxyalkylene moiety, and the mass distribution of the first alkyleneoxy moiety is different from the mass distribution of the second alkyleneoxy moiety. A triarylmethane leuco compound has a Formula (C). A composition comprises a plurality of triarylmethane leuco molecules, and about 5 mol. % or more of the triarylmethane leuco molecules present in the composition comprise a first alkyleneoxy moiety that does not contain at least one of the alkyleneoxy repeating units present in the second alkyleneoxy moiety. A method of making a triarylmethane leuco compound comprises the steps of: (a) providing an aromatic aldehyde compound; (b) providing a first oxyalkylenated aryl compound; (c) providing a second oxyalkylenated aryl compound, wherein the second oxyalkylenated aryl compound is different from the first oxyalkylenated aryl compound; (d) providing an acidic catalyst; and (e) reacting the aromatic aldehyde compound, the first oxyalkylenated compound, and the second oxyalkylenated compound in a condensation reaction in the presence of the acidic catalyst to produce the triarylmethane leuco compound.

A triarylmethane leuco compound has a Formula (C). A composition comprises a plurality of triarylmethane leuco molecules, and about 5 mol. % or more of the triarylmethane leuco molecules present in the composition comprise a first alkyleneoxy moiety that does not contain at least one of the alkyleneoxy repeating units present in the second alkyleneoxy moiety. A method of making a triarylmethane leuco compound comprises the steps of: (a) providing an aromatic aldehyde compound; (b) providing a first oxyalkylenated aryl compound; (c) providing a second oxyalkylenated aryl compound, wherein the second oxyalkylenated aryl compound is different from the first oxyalkylenated aryl compound; (d) providing an acidic catalyst; and (e) reacting the aromatic aldehyde compound, the first oxyalkylenated compound, and the second oxyalkylenated compound in a condensation reaction in the presence of the acidic catalyst to produce the triarylmethane leuco compound.
