A method for producing a surgical instrument is disclosed. The method comprises obtaining a handle, wherein the handle comprises a distal end comprising a shaft interface surface and a first set of magnetic elements. The method further comprises obtaining a shaft, wherein the shaft comprises a proximal end comprising a handle interface surface, a second set of magnetic elements, and a third set of magnetic elements. The method further comprises attaching the shaft to the handle, wherein the shaft interface surface is configured to engage the shaft at the handle interface surface, wherein an attractive magnetic force is configured to pull the handle towards the shaft when the first set of magnetic elements interact with the second magnetic elements, and wherein a repulsive magnetic force is configured to repel the handle from the shaft when the first set of magnetic elements interacts with the third set of magnetic elements.
Multi-fire fastener delivery system and method
A prosthesis fastener applier includes a handle, a plurality of input controls, and a fastener delivery shaft. The handle contains a motor and a control circuit. The input controls are connected to the handle and communicatively connected to the control circuit. The fastener delivery shaft includes a fastener cartridge and a driver shaft. The fastener cartridge includes a plurality of internal threads configured to receive a plurality of helical fasteners in stacked relationship. The driver shaft is operatively connected to the motor, disposed within the fastener cartridge, and configured to pass through respective inner diameters of the helical fasteners. The control circuit is configured to control the motor in response to signals from one or more of the input controls to rotate the driver shaft to cause one or more of the helical fasteners to be advanced axially relative to the fastener cartridge.

A surgical device includes a jaw assembly defining a first longitudinal axis and including a first jaw and a second jaw moveable relative to the first jaw; an elongated body defining a second longitudinal axis and coupled to a proximal end of the jaw assembly, wherein the jaw assembly is configured to articulate about an articulation axis transverse to the second longitudinal axis relative to the elongated body; and a handle assembly coupled to a proximal end of the elongated body and including at least one motor mechanically coupled to the jaw assembly and a control assembly including a first control button and a second control button, wherein actuation of the first control button moves the second jaw in approximation relative to the first jaw and actuating the second control button moves the second jaw away from the first jaw, and actuating the first and second control buttons moves the jaw assembly to a centered position in which the first and second longitudinal axes are substantially aligned, the handle assembly further includes an illumination member configured to output a light pattern indicative of a status of the surgical instrument.

An electronic system for a surgical instrument is disclosed. The electronic system comprises a main power supply circuit configured to supply electrical power to a primary circuit. A supplementary power supply circuit configured to supply electrical power to a secondary circuit. A short circuit protection circuit coupled between the main power supply circuit and the supplementary power supply circuit. The supplementary power supply circuit is configured to isolate itself from the main power supply circuit when the supplementary power supply circuit detects a short circuit condition at the secondary circuit. The supplementary power supply circuit is configured to rejoin the main power supply circuit and supply power to the secondary circuit, when the short circuit condition is remedied.
Method of hub communication with surgical instrument systems
A method for adjusting the operation of a surgical suturing instrument using machine learning in a surgical suite is disclosed. The method comprises gathering data during surgical procedures, wherein the surgical procedures include the use of a surgical suturing instrument comprising a suturing needle configured to be mechanically advanced through a suturing stroke, analyzing the gathered data to determine an appropriate operational adjustment of the surgical suturing instrument, and adjusting the operation of the surgical suturing instrument to improve the operation of the surgical suturing instrument.
SLIP RING ASSEMBLY FOR SURGICAL INSTRUMENT
A surgical instrument includes a body assembly, a shaft assembly extending distally from the body assembly along a shaft axis, and an end effector at a distal end of the shaft assembly. The shaft assembly includes an outer tube configured to rotate relative to the body assembly about the shaft axis. The surgical instrument further includes a slip ring assembly configured to enable electrical communication between the shaft assembly and the body assembly while permitting relative rotation therebetween. The slip ring assembly includes a first electrical contact supported by the outer tube, and a second electrical contact electrically coupled with the first electrical contact and positioned radially outward of the outer tube. The first electrical contact is configured to rotate with the outer tube about the shaft axis relative to the second electrical contact while the first and second electrical contacts remain electrically coupled.
Inductively powered end of life indicators for robotic surgical instruments
A surgical tool harvests power from a robotic surgical system having one or more robotic manipulators when a housing of the surgical tool is installed within a carriage of one of the robotic manipulators. The surgical tool harvests power via inductive coupling between an inductor of the surgical tool and a corresponding inductor of the carriage. The surgical tool may include an indicator that provides a user with an indication of remaining life of the surgical tool. The indicator may be an LED indicator that is illuminated with power generated via the inductive coupling. The indicator may also be an electro-chromic indicator that changes color when exposed to power generated via the inductive coupling. The indicator may also be a photo-chromic indicator that changes color when exposed to light from a light source powered via the inductive coupling.
