Carbon nanostructure preblends and their applications

A method for preparing a preblend of nanostructured carbon, such as nanotubes, fullerenes, or graphene, and a particulate solid, such as polymer beads, carbon black, graphitic particles or glassy carbon involving wet-mixing and followed by optional drying to remove the liquid medium. The preblend may be in the form of a core-shell powder material with the nanostructured carbon as the shell on the particulate solid core. The preblend may provide particularly improved dispersion of single-walled nanotubes in ethylene--olefin elastomer compositions, resulting in improved reinforcement from the nanotubes. The improved elastomer compositions may show simultaneous improvement in both modulus and in elongation at break. The elastomer compositions may be formed into useful rubber articles.

USE OF FEEDSTOCK IN CARBON BLACK PLASMA PROCESS

A method of making carbon black. A method of making carbon black is described including combusting feedstock with plasma in an apparatus having a series of unit operations with individual capacities. The individual capacities of the unit operations are substantially balanced by replacing at least part of the feedstock with a feedstock having a molecular weight heavier than methane. This results, among other things, in increased utilization of the individual capacities of the unit operations and increased overall throughput.

Pelleted acetylene black

The present invention relates to a pelleted acetylene black having a mass strength measured according to ASTM D 1937-10 of 200 N at most and an average pellet size measured according to ASTM D 1511-10 of at least 1.0 mm, to the use of any of said pelleted acetylene blacks to produce a compound comprising a resin or polymer or rubber matrix and the acetylene black dispersed in said matrix and to a method for producing such a compound.

Carbon black-containing composite particles of the present invention each include a silicon oxide and carbon black particles dispersed inside the silicon oxide. When a coating film containing the carbon black-containing composite particles dispersed in a transparent matrix, having a concentration of the carbon black particles of 1 mass %, and having a thickness of 25 m to 40 m is formed on a hiding-chart specified in JIS (Japanese Industrial Standards) K 5600-4-1: 1999, a difference L.sub.W*L.sub.B* obtained by subtracting lightness L.sub.B* of the coating film formed on a black part of the hiding-chart from lightness L.sub.W* of the coating film formed on a white part of the hiding-chart is 30 or less. Thus carbon black-containing composite particles advantageous in exhibiting a good hiding property and reducing an undertone can be provided.
