TRACING PLATFORMS AND INTRA-OPERATIVE SYSTEMS AND METHODS USING SAME

There is provided a tracing platform configured to rigidly attach to an anatomy of a patient that has at least one surface configured to provide a defined path (represented by path definition data) for tracing by a surgical instrument. An intra-operative computing unit receives pose data for the instrument when tracing the path and calculates a location of the defined path using the pose data and the path definition data. A change in location may be determined from pose data of different traces. Tracing the defined path generates a plurality of pose data which may increase accuracy of the location calculations. Redundant trace data may be received to eliminate bias. A geometric feature (e.g. V-groove), shape and/or magnetic properties of the platform may assist with tracing. The platform may rigidly attach to a bone using at least one of spikes, a bone screw, a cerclage wire, and a bone clamp.

VASCULAR ACCESS DEVICE AND GUIDING PORTION

According to various embodiments, a method and system to obtain access to a blood vessel underneath a skin layer that may preserve lifespan of the blood vessel and reduce executional skill variability may be provided. The method includes placing a guiding portion between the blood vessel and the skin layer; and configuring the guiding portion to receive and guide a needle to reach the same location of the blood vessel repeatedly and consistently; and forming a resultant scarred track between the blood vessel and the skin layer as the guiding portion is resorbed over time. The system includes a vascular access device configurable to first possess strength to penetrate through a tissue layer, subsequently possess flexibility to conform to the surrounding tissue beneath the tissue layer; and a guiding portion which may be resorbable, wherein the inlet includes a larger diameter compared to the outlet.

Biopsy localization method and device

Methods for localizing a biopsy site are disclosed. The method includes taking a tissue sample from a biopsy site and positioning a detectable, bioabsorbable element at the biopsy site at the time that the tissue sample was taken. The tissue sample is then tested. The biopsy site is then relocated by finding the bioabsorbable element. The bioabsorbable element may be made of collagen, gelatin, cellulose, polylactic acid, and/or polyglycolic acid. The detectable bioabsorbable element may be relocated using ultrasound or mammography. The bioabsorbable element may also swell upon contact with body fluid.

A self-closing device for implantation within a patient's body includes base material including an inner surface area for securing the base material to a tissue structure, and a plurality of support elements surrounding or embedded in the base material. The support elements are separable laterally within a plane of the base material to accommodate creating an opening through the base material for receiving one or more instruments through the base material, and biased to return laterally towards a relaxed state for self-closing the opening after removing the one or more instruments. The device may be provided as a patch or integrally attached to a tubular graft or in various shapes.

SIGNAL TAG DETECTION COMPONENTS, DEVICES, AND SYSTEMS

Provided herein are systems, devices, assemblies, and methods for localization of a tag in a tissue of a patient. For example, provided herein are systems, devices, and methods employing a detection component that is attached to or integrated with a surgical device, where the detection component detects a signal from a tag in a patient, where the tag is activated by remote introduction of a magnetic field.

PATIENT REFERENCE TOOL FOR RAPID REGISTRATION

An apparatus is provided that is at least partially visible by both a three dimensional (3D) scanner system of a medical navigation system and a tracking system of the medical navigation system. The apparatus includes a rigid member, a plurality of identifiable features attached to the rigid member and visible by the tracking system, a distinct identifiable portion visible by the 3D scanner system, and a connector mechanism attached to the rigid member to connect the apparatus to a location. The apparatus is in a field of view of the 3D scanner system and the tracking system within a timeframe of the 3D scan.

Device and method for safe location and marking of a biopsy cavity

Cavity and sentinel lymph node marking devices, marker delivery devices, and methods are disclosed. More particularly, upon insertion into a body, the cavity marking device and method enable one to determine the center, orientation, and periphery of the cavity by radiographic, mammography, echogenic, or other noninvasive imaging techniques. A composition and method are disclosed for locating the sentinel lymph node in a mammalian body to determine if cancerous cells have spread thereto. The composition is preferably a fluid composition consisting of a carrier fluid and some type of contrast agent; alternatively, the contrast agent may itself be a fluid and therefore not need a separate carrier fluid. This composition is capable of (1) deposition in or around a lesion and migration to and accumulation in the associated sentinel node, and (2) remote detection via any number of noninvasive techniques. Also disclosed is a method for remotely detecting the location of a sentinel node by (1) depositing a remotely detectable fluid in or around a lesion for migration to and accumulation in the associated sentinel node and (2) remotely detecting the location of that node with a minimum of trauma and toxicity to the patient. The composition and method may serve to mark a biopsy cavity, as well as mark the sentinel lymph node. The marking methods also may combine any of the features as described with the marking device and delivery device.
