Development of retarded acid system
In one embodiment, a retarded acid system comprises an aqueous acid and a retarding surfactant. The aqueous acid may comprise from 5 wt. % to 25 wt. % of a strong acid, that is, an acid having a K.sub.a greater than or equal to 0.01. The aqueous acid may further comprise from 75 wt. % to 95 wt. % water. The retarding surfactant may have the general chemical formula R—(OC.sub.2H.sub.4).sub.X—OH where R is a hydrocarbon having from 11 to 15 carbon atoms and x is an integer from 6 to 10. The retarding surfactant may have a hydrophilic-lipophilic balance from 8 to 16.

LUBRICIOUS THERMOPLASTIC COMPOUNDS AND THERMOPLASTIC ARTICLES MADE THEREFROM
Lubricious thermoplastic articles are formed from thermoplastic compounds including (a) thermoplastic elastomer selected from thermoplastic polyurethane, polyether block amide, and combinations thereof; and (b) from about 5 to about 20 weight percent, by weight of the compound, of hydrophilic water-insoluble polymer selected from polyolefin-polyoxyalkylene block copolymer, crosslinked polyvinylpyrrolidone, and combinations thereof. The thermoplastic compounds are capable of providing enhanced lubricity in the thermoplastic articles without significant degradation in mechanical properties such as elongation and tensile strength, as compared to thermoplastic articles formed from the neat thermoplastic elastomer and subjected to the same heat processing history.
Ionic liquids containing quaternary ammonium and phosphonium cations, and their use as environmentally friendly lubricant additives
An ionic liquid composition having the following generic structural formula: ##STR00001##
wherein Z is N or P, and R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, and R.sup.4 are independently selected from hydrogen atom and hydrocarbon groups having one to four carbon atoms with optional interconnection to form a cyclic group that includes Z, and wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, and R.sup.4 are all hydrocarbon groups when Z is P, and X.sup.− is a phosphorus-containing or carboxylate anion, particularly an organophosphate, organophosphonate, or organophosphinate anion, or a thio-substituted analog thereof containing hydrocarbon groups with at least three carbon atoms. Also described are lubricant compositions comprising the above ionic liquid and a base lubricant, wherein the ionic liquid is dissolved in the base lubricant. Further described are methods for applying the ionic liquid or lubricant composition onto a mechanical device for which lubrication is beneficial, with resulting improvement in friction reduction, wear rate, and/or corrosion inhibition.
