Corrosion inhibiting compositions and coatings including the same

A corrosion inhibiting composition includes a first plurality of carriers and a second plurality of carriers. The first plurality of carriers has a first carrier body which encapsulates a film-forming compound. The second plurality of carriers has a second carrier body encapsulates a corrosion inhibitor. Each of the first and second carrier bodies is formed of a degradable material. Coatings and methods for inhibiting corrosion on a metal substrate are also described herein.

2-(p-alkoxyphenyl)-2-imidazolines and their use as corrosion inhibitors

An aminoalkyl imidazolines of the formula: ##STR00001##
having p-octyloxy-, p-dodecyloxy-, or p-octadecyloxy-phenyl pendants as hydrophobes, for use to mitigate mild steel corrosion. An electron-rich aromatic ring, in conjugation with an amidine motif, imparts increasing corrosion inhibition efficiencies with an increasing hydrophobe chain length. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirms the formation of an aminoalkyl imidazoline film on a metal surface prior to reaching a critical molar concentration.

A corrosion inhibitor has a film-forming portion. In one embodiment, the corrosion inhibitor further includes a surfactant, a coupling solvent and a carrier solvent. In another embodiment, the corrosion inhibitor has a film-forming portion that includes at least two multi-dentate compounds and a compound having a single active group. Each of the multi-dentate compounds and the compound having a single active group are selected from the group consisting of compounds having nitrogen-containing polar groups, compounds having acid groups and combinations thereof.

Corrosion inhibitor

The present invention relates to a corrosion inhibitor and inhibitor provided within a coating material for coating a metal, particularly but not exclusively steel. The corrosion inhibitor in a coating particularly protects a sacrificial coating such as zinc or zinc alloy on galvanised steel which in turn therefore provides improved corrosion resistance to the underlying steel. According to an aspect of the invention there is a corrosion inhibitor provided in a polymer binder, the corrosion inhibitor comprising an organic ion in an ion exchange resin.

Identification and characterization of novel corrosion inhibitor molecules

Methods of employing corrosion inhibitors with oxidizing and/or non-oxidizing biocides, such as peroxycarboxylic acids, to provide corrosion protected compositions are disclosed. Various corrosion inhibitors further provide biocidal efficacy in addition to the corrosion protection providing further benefits for application of use. Methods of employing corrosion protected biocide compositions, such as peroxycarboxylic acid compositions, for corrosion protection are particularly well suited for treating fluids intended to flow through pipes, namely in the energy industry, water and paper industries, etc. Methods providing suitable corrosion protection in comparison to untreated systems and corrosion protected systems using conventional corrosion inhibitors, such as quaternary amines and imidazolines commonly used in the industry, are disclosed.
