Self-lubricating flexible carbon composite seal
A self-lubricating flexible carbon composite seal includes an annular body formed from a flexible carbon composite.
Polycrystalline diamond compact (PDC) cutting element having multiple catalytic elements
A polycrystalline diamond compact useful for wear, cutting, drilling, drawing and like applications is provided with a first diamond region remote from the working surface which has a metallic catalyzing material and a second diamond region adjacent to or including the working surface containing a non-metallic catalyst and the method of making such a compact is provided. This compact is particularly useful in high temperature operations, such as hard rock drilling because of the improved thermal stability at the working surface.
Armor component
An armor component including a body having a first portion including calcium boride compounds include non-stoichiometric calcium boride (CaB.sub.x) and stoichiometric calcium boride (CaB.sub.6) and having a density of at least about 80% theoretical density. In one aspect, the first portion can include a first phase comprising silicon carbide (SiC) and a second phase comprising calcium boride (CaB.sub.6). In another aspect, the first portion can further include a third phase comprising boron carbide (B.sub.4C).
MULTI-PHASIC CERAMIC COMPOSITE
A ceramic composite can include a first ceramic phase and a second ceramic phase. The first ceramic phase can include a silicon carbide. The second phase can include a boron carbide. In an embodiment, the silicon carbide in the first ceramic phase can have a grain size in a range of 0.8 to 200 microns. The first phase, the second phase, or both can further include a carbon. In another embodiment, at least one of the first ceramic phase and the second ceramic phase can have a median minimum width of at least 5 microns.
COMPOSITE CERAMIC COMPOSITION AND METHOD OF FORMING SAME
A composite ceramic composition including a boron carbide phase and a method of forming the same. The composite ceramic composition includes a tungsten boride phase, a transition metal boride phase. The composite ceramic composition may also include a carbon disposed in solid solution with at least the tungsten boride phase and the transition metal boride phase. The transition metal boride phase may include a boride of at least one metal chosen from Cr, Nb, and Zr.
Syntactic Insulator with Co-Shrinking Fillers
A thermally-insulating composite material with co-shrinkage in the form of an insulating material formed by the inclusion of microballoons in a matrix material such that the microballoons and the matrix material exhibit co-shrinkage upon processing. The thermally-insulating composite material can be formed by a variety of microballoon-matrix material combinations such as polymer microballoons in a preceramic matrix material. The matrix materials generally contain fine rigid fillers.
SILICON CARBIDE BODY WITH LOCALIZED DIAMOND REINFORCEMENT
A reaction-bonded silicon carbide (SiC) body is produced by: providing a preform including ceramic elements and carbon, and one or more surface features; providing a powder which includes diamond particles and carbon; locating the powder in the surface feature(s); and infiltrating the preform and the powder with molten silicon (Si) to form reaction-bonded SiC in the preform, and to form reaction-bonded SiC coatings on the diamond particles. The present disclosure also relates to a device/component which includes: a main body portion and discrete elements located at least partially within the main body portion. The main body portion may include reaction-bonded SiC and Si, but not diamond, while the discrete elements include diamond particles, reaction-bonded SiC coatings surrounding the diamond particles, and Si. According to the present disclosure, diamond may be advantageously located only where it is needed.
COMPOSITES AND METHODS OF FORMING COMPOSITES HAVING AN INCREASED VOLUME OF CERAMIC PARTICLES
A fiber reinforced composite component may include interleaved textile layers and ceramic particle layers coated with matrix material. The fiber reinforced composite component may be fabricated by forming a fibrous preform and densifying the fibrous preform. The fibrous preform may be fabricated by forming a first ceramic particle layer over a first textile layer, disposing a second textile layer over the first ceramic particle layer, forming a second ceramic particle layer over the second textile layer, and disposing a third textile layer over the second ceramic particle layer.
Surface layer on a ceramic matrix composite
The disclosure describes a method for forming a surface layer of a ceramic matrix composite (CMC) article. The technique includes depositing a slurry on a surface of an infiltrated CMC. The slurry includes a carrier material, a binder, a plasticizer, and solid particles. The solid particles include a plurality of fine ceramic particles defining a fine particle average size less than about 5 micrometers. The method further includes drying the slurry to form an article having an outer surface layer that includes the solid particles on the infiltrated CMC. The method further includes machining at least a portion of the outer surface layer of the article. The method further includes infiltrating the article with a molten infiltrant to form a composite article.
Forming features in additively manufactured composite materials using sacrificial support materials
A method may include depositing a sacrificial support material on or adjacent to a build surface. The sacrificial support material may be configured to support a continuous reinforcement material during an additive manufacturing technique. The method also may include extruding the continuous reinforcement material from an additive manufacturing device such that at least a portion of the continuous reinforcement material contacts and is supported by the sacrificial support material; and removing the sacrificial support material to result in a feature defined at least in part by the continuous reinforcement material at the absence of sacrificial support material.
