METHOD FOR PREPARATION OF DENSE HfC(Si)-HfB2 COMPOSITE CERAMIC
20210179499 · 2021-06-17 ·

A method for the preparation of a dense HfC(Si)—HfB.sub.2 composite ceramic. hafnium oxide powders, nano-sized carbon black and silicon hexaboride powders are mixed in a molar ratio of (1-10):(1-20):(1-5) to obtain a powder mixture. The powder mixture is subjected to ball milling, dried and transferred to a graphite mold for spark plasma sintering. In this way, an in-situ carbon-boron reduction reaction and the sintering densification are completed in one step, and the obtained HfC(Si)—HfB.sub.2 composite ceramic has a density of 94.0%-100% and uniformly dispersed grains.

INDUCTION MELT INFILTRATION PROCESSING OF CERAMIC MATRIX COMPOSITE COMPONENTS

A system and method of melt infiltrating components is provided. In one example aspect, an inductive heating system includes a heating source that inductively heats a susceptor. The susceptor defines a working chamber in which components can be received. During melt infiltration, the system can heat the susceptor and thus the components and melt infiltrants disposed within the working chamber at a first heating rate. The first heating rate can be faster than 50° C./minute. The system can then heat the components and melt infiltrants at a second heating rate. The first heating rate is faster than the second heating rate. Thereafter, the system can heat the components and infiltrants at a third heating rate. The third heating rate can be a constant rate at or above the melting point of the melt infiltrants. The infiltrants can melt and thus infiltrate into the component to densify the component.

Three-dimensional (3D) printing with a sintering aid/fixer fluid and a liquid functional material

In an example of a three-dimensional (3D) printing method, a ceramic build material is applied. A liquid functional material, including an anionically stabilized susceptor material, is applied to at least a portion of the ceramic build material. A sintering aid/fixer fluid, including a cationically stabilized amphoteric alumina particulate material, is applied to the at least the portion of the ceramic build material. The applied anionically stabilized susceptor material and the applied cationically stabilized amphoteric alumina particulate material react to immobilize the anionically stabilized susceptor material, thereby patterning the at least the portion of the ceramic build material.

SLURRY INFILTRATION HEAT TREATMENT METHOD
20210155558 · 2021-05-27 ·

A method of producing a melt infiltrated ceramic matrix composite (CMC) article that includes the steps of: forming a ceramic fiber preform; optionally, rigidizing the ceramic fiber preform with a fiber interphase coating via a Chemical Vapor Infiltration (CVI) process, infiltrating a ceramic slurry into the porous body or preform, conducting one or more secondary operations, and finally, melt infiltrating the preform with molten silicon or a silicon alloy to form the CMC article. The infiltration of a ceramic slurry into a ceramic fiber preform to form a green body is performed along with the use of convection and/or conduction as heat transfer mechanisms, such that the ceramic slurry does not require the incorporation of a pre-gelation material in order for the slurry to remain within the green body during subsequent processing steps.

A method of producing a CMC having a smooth surface includes forming a fiber preform; rigidizing the preform with an interphase coating; infiltrating a ceramic slurry into the preform to form a green body; conducting secondary operations on the green body; applying a slurry-based layer onto a portion of the green body; and infiltrating the green body with a molten silicon or silicon alloy, such that the CMC exhibits a smooth surface. The application of the slurry-based surface layer onto the green body includes placing the green body into a tool fixture having upper and lower components, such that a gap is present between the green body and at least one of the upper and lower components; and delivering a surface layer slurry into at least one gap, such that the surface layer slurry forms the slurry-based layer on at least a portion of the green body.

A method of producing a CMC component that includes forming a preform having a plurality of ceramic fiber plies with each ply occupying a predetermined position; rigidizing the preform with a fiber interphase coating; inspecting the preform to determine which of the plies has partially or fully delaminated; reworking the delaminated plies in the preform; infiltrating a ceramic slurry into the preform to form a green body; optionally, conducting a secondary operation on the green body; and infiltrating the green body with a molten silicon or silicon alloy to form the CMC component. The step of reworking delaminated plies may also be applied to a green body formed after ceramic slurry infiltration into a rigidized fiber preform.
