Blowing agent compositions for insulating foams

Disclosed is a blowing agent composition comprising a hydrofluoroolefins (HFO) and a branched hydrocarbon, and a foamable polymer composition comprising the blowing agent composition. Also disclosed is a method of making a polymer foam utilizing a blowing agent composition comprising an HFO and a branched hydrocarbon.

Compositions comprising HCFC-243db, HCFO-1233xf, and/or HCFC-244db are useful in processes to make HFO-1234yf. Compositions comprising HFO-1234yf are useful, among other uses, as heat transfer compositions for use in refrigeration, air-conditioning and heat pump systems.

Formulated polyol compositions include a non-halogenated polyol, a halogenated polyol, a phosphorus-containing flame retardant, an HFO and/or HCFO blowing agent and certain urethane catalysts. The compositions exhibit excellent storage stability. Foams made from the formulated polyol compositions have unexpectedly improved fire performance, as indicated by certain fire tests.

The rigid polyurethane foams are produced from an isocyanate-reactive composition comprising: (1) a polyol blend that includes an amine-initiated polyether polyol; (2) a hydrochlorofluoroolefin (“HCFO”); and (3) a catalyst that includes an arylalkyl tertiary amine, an aryl tertiary amine, or a mixture thereof. The foam can have excellent adhesion to metal substrates.

The blowing agent is predominately the trans isomer of the hydrochlorofluoroolefin (HCFO) HFCO-1233zd alone or in combination with a hydrofluoroolefin (HFO), hydrofluorocarbon (HFC), hydrochlorofluoroolefin (HCFO), a hydrocarbon. The blowing agent is effective as a blowing agent in the manufacture of thermosetting foams.

AMINE CATALYSTS FOR POLYURETHANE FOAMS

The invention provides polyurethane and polyisocyanurate foams and methods for the preparation thereof. More particularly, the invention relates to open-celled, polyurethane and polyisocyanurate foams and methods for their preparation. The foams are characterized by a fine uniform cell structure and little or no foam collapse. The foams are produced with a polyol premix composition which comprises a combination of a hydrohaloolefin blowing agent, a polyol, a silicone surfactant, and a sterically hindered amine catalyst.
