The present invention relates to optionally polymerizable mesogen compounds that include a polyvalent non-mesogenic core X to which is bonded three or four separate extensions, where each extension independently includes, in sequence, a linking group -L-, and a mesogen group -[Mesogen]. The mesogen compounds are represented by the following Formula (I), With reference to Formula (I), v is 3 or 4; t is 0 or 1; at least one Mesogen includes at least four cyclic groups; each -L- independently has an average chain length of at least 15 bonds; and at least one -L- has an average chain length of at least 25. Also described are liquid crystal compositions that include such mesogen compounds, and optical elements that include such mesogen compounds.

A welding helmet (1) has a protective shield (2) and a first swivel mechanism (10) that pivotally connects the protective shield with a head suspension system (6) for swiveling about a swivel axis. The first swivel mechanism enables the protective shield and the head suspension system to be swiveled between a lowered position, in which the protective shield covers a wearer's face, and an upraised position, in which the protective shield uncovers the wearer's face. The first swivel mechanism (10) has a recess (16a) and a retainer (17a) for engaging with the recess. An improved system and method for an eye patch can comprise a patch and a pad. The patch can be substantially flat and flexible. Furthermore, the patch can comprise a bottom surface, a top surface, and a concave edge. The bottom surface can comprise an adhesive capable of temporarily attaching to a skin. The concave edge can be on one side of the patch. Additionally, the concave edge can substantially match the anatomical curve of a human's eye socket. The pad can be a raised portion on the patch that can be capable of pushing upper natural eyelashes upward when a client closes her eyes. The pad can be attachable along the concave edge.

A multi-layer visor system for a surgical hood or garment is provided. The system includes a base film layer and one or more removable film layers that are coextruded at high temperature to form a sterile surface between each of the film layers should the surgeon elect to peel away a soiled or splattered removable film layer during the course of a surgical procedure so that an unobstructed view can be maintained. Thus, no separate sterilization step is required in order to sterilize the layers of the visor system. Each of the removable film layers can additionally include a tab having distinctive features in order to enable a wearer to easily distinguish between the tabs in order to make it easier for a wearer to know which tab to pull first to remove the outermost removable film layer. Further, because the tabs are located about the perimeter of the removable films, viewing is not obscured, yet the film layers are held securely in place until easily removed from the underlying removable film layer or base film layer.

A lens is provided that has an improved optical configuration in order to provide enhanced off-axis optical performance by tending to reduce, eliminate, or minimize first order optical distortion. Embodiments may be used in non-corrective or corrective unitary or dual lens eyewear, for example in combination with a frame to support the lens in a path of a straight ahead line of sight forming a center axis of an eye of a typical wearer. The lens may comprise a lens body. The lens body may comprise a surface having a spheric, toric, cylindrical or freeform geometry and another surface having a freeform geometry. A lens thickness is defined between the surfaces. A prismatic power of the lens is improved, particularly for off-axis viewing angles.
