Medical arrangement for shutting off a body channel

A medical device for shutting off a body channel is provided including a band section that can be placed around the body tissue surrounding a body channel and can be closed to form a ring enclosing a passage opening for the body tissue, and has a cavity which makes up one part of a working fluid receiving chamber of the device, for receiving working fluid, and a pump unit for conveying the working fluid. The passage opening is made smaller by introducing the working fluid into the cavity. The arrangement also includes a storage container that has a flexible wall which delimits a storage chamber, wherein to apply an additional force to the body tissue guided through the passage opening, the volume of the storage chamber is made smaller by increasing an ambient pressure acting on the storage container, and the wall of the storage container is at least substantially non-extensible.

Spinal implant with expandable fixation

A spinal implant which is configured to be deployed between adjacent vertebral bodies. The implant has at least one fixation element with a retracted configuration to facilitate deployment of the implant and an extended configuration so as to engage a surface of an adjacent vertebral body and secure the implant between two vertebral bodies. Preferably, the implant is expandable and has a minimal dimension in its unexpanded state that is smaller than the dimensions of the neuroforamen through which it must pass to be deployed within the intervertebral space. Once within the space between vertebral bodies, the implant can be expanded so as to engage the endplates of the adjacent vertebrae to effectively distract the anterior disc space, stabilize the motion segments and eliminate pathologic spine motion. Angular deformities can be corrected, and natural curvatures restored and maintained.

Medical device for narrowing or closing an anatomical channel

A medical device for narrowing or closing an anatomical channel includes a band part (1) which can be placed around the body tissue (2) surrounding the anatomical channel and which can be closed to form a ring that encloses a through-opening (6) for the body tissue, wherein the band part (1) has a hollow chamber (3), and wherein the through-opening (6) can be made smaller by introducing a fluid into the hollow chamber (3). The medical device moreover includes a pump unit (10) which serves to convey the fluid and which has an electric drive (15) controllable by an electronic control system of the device, wherein a pressure value corresponding to the pressure of the fluid in the hollow chamber (3) or dependent on this pressure can be detected by the electronic control system. The device moreover has an air pressure sensor (23) for detecting the atmospheric pressure.

Expandable intervertebral implant and associated method of manufacturing the same

An expandable intervertebral implant (10) includes superior (20) and inferior (30) bone contacting members and at least one vertical wire netting (50) interconnecting the superior and inferior bone contacting members. The superior and inferior bone contacting members include at least two bone contacting components interconnected via one or more lateral wire nettings such that the implant is vertically and laterally expandable in situ from a first insertion configuration to a second expanded configuration. The vertical and lateral wire netting are preferably constructed of a plurality of individual link members. The present invention also preferably relates to an associated method of manufacturing the intervertebral implant such that the intervertebral implant can be manufactured as an integral component or part.

HEAT TUNABLE INTRAOCULAR LENS

A method and system provide an ophthalmic lens including a lens body having a chamber therein, a reservoir module coupled with the lens body and an optical fluid. At least part of the lens body is flexible. The reservoir module includes a reservoir and a heat sensitive portion bordering the reservoir. The reservoir has a reservoir volume and is fluidically connected with the chamber. The heat sensitive portion has a shape responsive to a temperature of at least forty five degrees Celsius such that the reservoir volume changes in response to at least part of the heat sensitive portion reaching the temperature. The optical fluid resides in the chamber and the reservoir. A change in the reservoir volume flows a portion of the optical fluid between the reservoir and the chamber such that the flexible portion of the lens body undergoes a shape change corresponding to a base power change.

Posterior prosthetic intervertebral disc

A prosthetic intervertebral disc is formed of first and second end plates sized and shaped to fit within an intervertebral space and to be implanted from the back of the patient, thereby decreasing the invasiveness of the procedure. The posterior approach provides for a smaller posterior surgical incision and avoids important blood vessels located anterior to the spine particularly for lumbar disc replacements. The first and second plates are each formed of first, second and third parts are arranged in a first configuration in which the parts are axially aligned to form a low profile device appropriate for insertion through the small opening available in the TLIF or PLIF approaches described above. The three parts of both of the plates rotate and translate with respect to one another in situ to a second configuration or a deployed configuration in which the parts are axially unaligned with each other to provide a maximum coverage of the vertebral end plates for a minimum of insertion profile. Upon deployment of the disc, a height of the disc is increased.

APPARATUS AND METHOD FOR INSERTING A CONDYLAR IMPLANT ASSEMBLY

The disclosure generally relates to condylar implant assemblies and methods for inserting an implant assembly for supporting the condylar head of a bone. More particularly the disclosure relates to an implant assembly for use in support of the condyle of a humerus, femur, or other bones having a condyle comprising spongy bone. In some implementations, the implant assembly may be inserted into the head of the bone and bands of a dilating member of the implant assembly may be expanded through slots in a tube of the implant assembly for supporting the condylar head of the bone.

The present invention provides an expandable fusion device capable of being installed inside an intervertebral disc space to maintain normal disc spacing and restore spinal stability, thereby facilitating an intervertebral fusion. In one embodiment, the fusion device includes a body portion, a first endplate, and a second endplate, the first and second endplates capable of being moved in a direction away from the body portion into an expanded configuration or capable of being moved towards the body portion into an unexpanded configuration. The fusion device is capable of being deployed and installed in both configurations.

EXPANDABLE INTERVERTEBRAL IMPLANT

An implant for therapeutically separating bones of a joint has two endplates each having an opening through the endplate, and at least one ramped surface on a side opposite a bone engaging side. A frame is slideably connected to the endplates to enable the endplates to move relative to each other at an angle with respect to the longitudinal axis of the implant, in sliding connection with the frame. An actuator screw is rotatably connected to the frame. A carriage forms an open area aligned with the openings in the endplates. The openings in the endplates pass through the carriage to form an unimpeded passage from bone to bone of the joint. The carriage has ramps which mate with the ramped surfaces of the endplates, wherein when the carriage is moved by rotation of the actuator screw, the endplates move closer or farther apart.
