STYRENIC BLOCK COPOLYMER COMPOSITION AND ANION EXCHANGE MEMBRANES MADE THEREOF
The disclosure relates to a hydrogenated styrene-based multiblock copolymer composition, having selectively quaternized midblock, for forming anion-exchange membranes (AEMs). The quaternized hydrogenated styrene-based multiblock copolymer is characterized as having a high glass transition temperature from the hydrophobic end-blocks, low vinyl (rubber) content, and quaternized mid-block. AEMs made from the composition have improved thermal and dimensional stability in electrolyzer operations.
Polymers having stable cationic pendant groups for use as anion exchange membranes
Poly(aryl alkylene) polymers or poly(aryl-crown ether-alkylene) polymers with pendant cationic groups are provided which have an alkaline-stable cation, such as imidazolium, introduced into a rigid aromatic polymer backbone free of ether bonds. Hydroxide exchange membranes or hydroxide exchange ionomers formed from these polymers exhibit superior chemical stability, hydroxide conductivity, decreased water uptake, good solubility in selected solvents, and improved mechanical properties in an ambient dry state as compared to conventional hydroxide exchange membranes or ionomers. Hydroxide exchange membrane fuel cells and hydroxide exchange membrane electrolyzers comprising the poly(aryl alkylene) polymers or poly(aryl-crown ether-alkylene) polymers with pendant cationic groups exhibit enhanced performance and durability at relatively high temperatures.
THERMALLY STABLE HYDROCARBON-BASED ANION EXCHANGE MEMBRANE AND IONOMERS
An anion exchange membrane is composed of a copolymer of 1,1-diphenylethylene and one or more styrene monomers, such as 4-tert-butylstyrene. The copolymer includes a backbone substituted with a plurality of ionic groups coupled to phenyl groups on the backbone via hydrocarbyl tethers between about 1 and about 7 carbons in length. High-temperature conditions enabled by these copolymers enhance conductivity performance, making them particularly suitable for use in anion exchange membranes in fuel cells, electrolyzers employing hydrogen, ion separations, etc. The properties of the membranes can be tuned via the degree of functionalization of the phenyl groups and selection of the functional groups, such as quaternary ammonium groups. Several processes can be used to incorporate the desired ionic functional groups into the polymers, such as chloromethylation, radical bromination, Friedel-Crafts acylation and alkylation, sulfonation followed by amination, or combinations thereof.
Triblock copolymer based anion exchange membranes (AEMs) as separators in electrochemical devices
The present disclosure is directed to triblock copolymer based anion exchange membranes (AEMs) and methods for making same. The membranes are useful as separators in electrochemical devices, such as fuel cells, electrolyzers, water desalination systems, and redox flow batteries.
HOMOGENEOUS ANION EXCHANGE MEMBRANE AND BIOSENSING MEMBRANE PREPARED FROM THE SAME
Disclosed herein is a homogeneous anion exchange membrane produced by subjecting a hydrophilic monomer having an ethylenically unsaturated group to free radical polymerization with a quaternary ammonium salt having an ethylenically unsaturated group, a crosslinking agent, and a photoinitiator. A molar ratio of the hydrophilic monomer to the quaternary ammonium salt is in a range from 1:0.1 to 1:0.7. A biosensing membrane prepared from the homogeneous anion exchange membrane is also disclosed.
Coated porous polymeric membranes
The present disclosure provides a porous polymeric membrane that is coated with a cross-linked polymerized monomer. The coating on the porous polymeric membrane has a charge when it is immersed in an organic liquid. The coated porous polymeric membrane, a filter utilizing the membrane, and a method for treating an organic liquid used for photoresist with the coated porous polymeric membrane to remove metal contaminants from the organic liquid are disclosed.
