Polymerizable compound as well as liquid crystal composition and liquid crystal display device each including polymerizable compound
The present invention provides a compound represented by the general formula (i), which has a partial structure K.sup.i1 represented by one of the general formulae (K-1) to (K-6) and has a ring B with at least one P-Sp- group and with at least one R.sup.i2 (R.sup.i2 denotes a linear or branched alkyl group having 2 to 10 carbon atoms or a linear or branched halogenated alkyl group having 2 to 10 carbon atoms, —CH.sub.2— in the alkyl or halogenated alkyl group is optionally substituted with —CH═CH—, —O—, —COO—, or —OCO—, but —O— is not adjacent to another —O—). Thus, the compound in a liquid crystal composition adsorbs to substrates between which the liquid crystal composition (a liquid crystal layer) exists. The compound can hold vertically aligned liquid crystal molecules, can improve alignment stability, and can ensure low-temperature storage stability.
Liquid crystal composition containing polymerizable compound and display device thereof
A liquid crystal composition includes at least one compound of general Formula I, at least one compound of general Formula II and at least one compound of general Formula M. The polymerizable liquid crystal composition provides a higher VHR (especially an excellent VHR after UV irradiation), a lower surface roughness of the polymer layer, a faster polymerization rate, a lower residual amount of the polymerizable compound and a better pretilt angle stability, which enables the production of a liquid crystal display device with a better voltage stability and a faster response speed, and can effectively reduce or prevent the occurrences of problems such as “burn-in”, “image sticking”, “Zara Particle” and “uneven display” in the liquid crystal display device. A liquid crystal display includes the liquid crystal composition. ##STR00001##
POLYMERISABLE COMPOUNDS AND THE USE THEREOF IN LIQUID-CRYSTAL DISPLAYS
The present invention relates to polymerisable compounds, to processes and intermediates for the preparation thereof, to liquid-crystal (LC) media comprising them, and to the use of the polymerisable compounds and LC media for optical, electro-optical and electronic purposes, in particular in LC displays, especially in LC displays of the polymer sustained alignment (PS, PSA) and self-aligning (SA) type.
LIQUID-CRYSTAL MEDIUM
Liquid-crystalline (LC) media having positive dielectric anisotropy and liquid-crystal displays (LCDs) containing these media, especially displays addressed by an active matrix and in particular to LC displays of the TN, PS-TN, STN, TN-TFT, OCB, IPS, PS-IPS, FFS, HB-FFS PS-FFS, SA-HB-FFS, polymer stabilised SA-HB-FFS, positive VA or positive PS-VA type.
Liquid-crystalline medium for use in a switching element
The present invention relates to liquid-crystalline media comprising one or more mesogenic compounds of formula I as set forth hereinafter, wherein the one or more compounds of formula I are contained in the medium in an amount, based on the overall contents of the medium, of at least 15% by weight. The present invention further relates to a switching layer, a switching element and a window element containing the liquid-crystalline medium.
Polymerizable compound, and liquid crystal composition and liquid crystal display element in which the compound is used
The compound is represented by general formula (i). In the compound, in a group K.sup.i1, at least two secondary carbon atoms in an alkyl group (a linear alkyl, halogenated alkyl, or cyanogenated alkyl group having 3 to 40 carbon atoms) are replaced with —C(═X.sup.i1)— and/or —CH(—CN)—, where X.sup.i1 is an oxygen atom, a sulfur atom, NH, or NR.sup.13; in addition, a group A.sup.i2, a group A.sup.i3, or the group K.sup.i1 includes, as a substituent, at least one P.sup.i1-Sp.sup.i1- group, where P.sup.i1 is a polymerizable group, and SP.sup.i1 is a spacer group or a single bond. The liquid crystal composition including the compound represented by general formula (i) can be adsorbed onto substrates between which a liquid crystal layer is held, and, consequently, without the use of an alignment film, liquid crystal molecules can be maintained in a state in which the liquid crystal molecules are aligned in a vertical direction. ##STR00001##
