METHOD FOR SURFACE TREATMENT PRIOR TO METALLIZATION
There is provided a method for treating a surface comprising heating the object and the object with a solution comprising a thermal initiator and a polymerizable molecule, wherein the polymerizable molecule reacts with the surface and forms a covalent bond and optionally a covalently bound polymer on the surface of the object. Metal ions are bound to the surface to make the surface possible for adding further metal later. Advantages include that complicated geometries can be coated, problems with oxygen inhibition of the initiator is reduced, and surface reaction to form covalent bonds is promoted compared to the bulk polymerization reaction.
SURFACE CONDITIONER FOR ELECTROLESS DEPOSITION
A composition which conditions a surface for electroless deposition of a metal is disclosed. The composition comprises a polymer surfactant comprising repeating units of a monomer, wherein each of the repeating units comprises a functional group; a metal ion; and water, wherein the functional group in each of the repeating units forms a complex with the metal ion. In a preferred embodiment, the functional group is amine, and the surfactant comprises polyethyleneimine and/or polyallylamine. The metal ion comprises cobalt, rhodium, palladium or silver. A method of forming the composition as well as a method of electroless deposition using the composition are also disclosed.
Floating metallized element assembly and method of manufacturing thereof
A floating metallized element assembly and method of manufacturing thereof are disclosed. The floating metallized element assembly includes a work piece of a plateable resin and a non-plateable resin including a front side and a back side. The work piece includes at least one plated decorative region on the plateable resin at the front side. The work piece also includes at least one network of the plateable resin at the back side. The work piece additionally includes a plurality of discrete current paths of the plateable resin extending from the at least one network to the at least one plated decorative region. The work piece also includes at least one non-plated decorative region of the non-plateable resin adjacent the at least one decorative region. Metal surfaces are adhered to and disposed on the at least one plated decorative region.
A METHOD FOR ACTIVATING A SURFACE OF A NON-CONDUCTIVE OR CARBON-FIBRES CONTAINING SUBSTRATE FOR METALLIZATION
Method for activating a surface of a non-conductive or carbon-fibres containing substrate for metallization, the method including: (a) providing said substrate, (b) providing an aqueous, palladium-free activation composition comprising (i) a first species of dissolved transition metal ions and additionally metal particles thereof, (ii) at least one complexing agent, (iii) permanently or temporarily at least one reducing agent, (iv) optionally one or more second species of dissolved metal ions different from the first species, (c) contacting the substrate with said activation composition such that a transition metal or a transition metal alloy is deposited on the surface of said substrate and an activated surface for metallization is obtained.
Sensitizing solution and method of its preparation
A sensitizing solution, especially a sensitizing solution for sensitizing surfaces, containing a solution of tin(II) chloride SnCl.sub.2 and distilled water, especially for sensitizing non-conductive surfaces, which further contains glycerine. A method of preparation of the sensitizing solution, especially the method of preparation of the sensitizing solution, according to which the solution of tin(II) chloride SnCl.sub.2 and distilled water is mixed with a reducing agent, which is glycerine.
DECORATIVE AUTOMOTIVE COMPONENT HAVING MULTIPLE ELECTRICAL CURRENT PATHWAYS AND DIFFERENT SURFACE FINISHES
A decorative work piece or component, such as a decorative automotive trim component, and method for plating a work piece is provided. An electroless layer of material is applied to the work piece using an electroless plating process. A barrier in electrical conductivity is provided on the work piece to divide the work piece into a first segment and a second segment which are substantially electrically insulated from one another, prior to electroplating the work piece. A plurality of methods are disclosed for dividing the work piece into the first and second segments. The component includes different surface finishes on each of the electrically isolated segments, with the finishes having different appearance, gloss level, color, and/or distinction of image as a result of electroplating and without post-electroplating mechanical alteration and assembly.
Surface activated polymers
An aqueous composition for use in activating surface of polymers.
Hyperbranched polymer, metal recovery agent, metal recovery method, and catalytic activity inhibitor
There is provided a hyper-branched polymer represented by the following formula (1) and having a weight-average molecular weight in a range of 1,000 to 1,000,000. In the formula (1), A.sup.1 is a group containing an aromatic ring, A.sup.2 is a group containing an amide group, A.sup.3 is a group containing sulfur, R.sup.0 is hydrogen or a substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbon group having 1 to 10 carbon atoms, ml is in a range of 0.5 to 11, and n1 is in a range of 5 to 100. ##STR00001##
COATING OF NANO-SCALED CAVITIES
Methods, systems, and apparatus for coating the internal surface of nano-scale cavities on a substrate are contemplated. A first fluid of high wettability is applied to the nano-scale cavity, filling the cavity. A second fluid carrying a conductor or a catalyst is applied over the opening of the nano-scale cavity. The second fluid has a lower vapor pressure than the first fluid. The first fluid is converted to a gas, for example by heating the substrate. The gas exits the nano-scale cavity, creating a negative pressure or vacuum in the nano-scale cavity. The negative pressure draws the second fluid into the nano-scale cavity. The conductor is deposited on the interior surface of the nano-scale cavity, preferably less than 10 nm thick.
CHROME-FREE ADHESION PRE-TREATMENT FOR PLASTICS
Provided are chrome-free adhesion pretreatment processes for use on a variety of reinforced or unreinforced plastics and polymers, such as polyimides, polyetherimides and polyvinylchloride. The pretreatment process can be performed in a combination of two sequential operations, which includes treating with a first solution containing nitric acid and subsequently treating with a second solution that includes sulfuric acid and periodate ions. Alternatively, the pretreatment process can be performed by treatment with a single combined composition that includes nitric acid, sulfuric acid, and periodate ions. The pretreatment processes, either done in two separate solutions, sequentially, or in one combined solution, produce an adherent surface for further metallization of the article, with adhesional values of the metal layer higher than those achieved using conventional chromic acid pretreatment processes.
